Introduce Yourself : It's been going great by James Hoey

It's been going great

Hey everyone! Wanted to share some good things happening in my corner of the world. I'm Jim Hoey, co-owner of Lords of Misrule Productions, and co-host of the Bravo for the B-side podcast. My wife and I have been having some great experiences with the podcast and our writing. On the podcast side, we've had the opportunity to speak with some great filmmakers and actors: Anton Doiron (writer/director of Space Trucker Bruce), Karl Sears (Space Trucker Bruce himself), Hilton Ariel Ruiz (writer/director of Zombie with a Shotgun), Kyle Hester (actor in Zombie with a Shotgun, The Chair, indie producer), Failureboys Productions (Attack of the Tattie-Bogle), Lowell Dean (writer/director WolfCop, Another WolfCop, SuperGrid), Alex Cox (writer/director Tombstone Rashomon, Sid & Nancy, Repo Man, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), which will air next week, and more coming down the road.

We have made connections with a lot of folks working in Indie film and mainstream film. It is amazing to us because we are essentially nobodies in the belly-button of the midwest. Our time here on Stage32 of the years has helped get our scripts in front of producers and execs in ways that we never could have expected. Nope, not paid to plug the site, it's just the truth. We mention it a lot in our podcast. We have several features scripts and a TV series pilot that we are pushing. Have had many, many close calls but haven't yet closed the distance on that last inch to the finish line that comes with a paycheck.

We have a short film that has been in post production for years. Trying to fix previous problems and turn it into something watchable. We are working on gearing up to start another short film. Working on novelizing our TV series, and to make a graphic novel series out of it.

If you're new here and just starting out, let me just say it's a pain in the ass, this business, but you have to push forward no matter what. The disappointments mount. The close-calls become more frequent. The light at the end of the tunnel suddenly goes dark time and again. That's the business. It sucks, but if you are a creative you have set your path on this bumpy as hell ride. Reach out to other members on here and make some connections. Ask for advice. Offer advice. It takes time, but it's worth it. We have been on here for years, but only started the production company and podcast six months ago. Before that, we've pitched, attended webinars, reached out to those in our network, all to keep pushing our desire to become paid creatives.

Don't stop. Don't despair. There are thousands of people on here just like you. Reach out. Find your tribe.

And it is always a pleasure to meet you.

Hey, James! Nice to meet you! And congrats on your recent success! LOVE the positivity you bring! Would you be willing to respond to 3 other posts in the Filmmaking Lounge to continue spreading that positivity? https://www.stage32.com/lounge/directing

Great to hear you're still writing! Have you been pitching these ideas to the executives on Stage32? https://www.stage32.com/scriptservices/pitch-sessions If not, I would highly recommend it! The Writer's Room is also very helpful for keeping accountable, especially since it's so easy for us writer's to go off-track: https://www.stage32.com/home/

Enjoy exploring and keep doing you!

James Hoey

Hi Karen! I'll happily respond. Are there specific ones you had in mind? We do pitch, have been for quite some time. Have made some great connections doing that. If you'd like to message me with the specific posts to respond to I'll get on that. Love to share positivity, that's the point of our podcast really. We chose probably the smallest audience possible for a podcast, but we want to stress that, in a nutshell, people can succeed in whatever part of the filmmaking process they are engaged.

Godspeed in all y’all do.

James Hoey Nope, trust your instincts and dive into the FIlmmakers Lounge as you see fit. I know they'd enjoy your responses! https://www.stage32.com/lounge/directing
