Anything Goes : Literary Agents by Tim Bragg

Literary Agents

How many projects should you have before seeking representation? I have shorts and features.

Ronika Merl

I think the recommendation is at least 3 solid, solid, solid features. But I was nowhere near ready after just 3. Now I've 12, and now one of them is in preproduction... and NOW I feel im ready. But some get representation before they even wrote a whole one. It depends I think on where you see your career going and also on the pace at which you're trying to get there.

Tristan Hutchinson

I would say only one. You will receive many rejections before securing the right agent. Therefore I would recommend to start early. And never give up.

Demedrius Charles

How do you start the conversation about representation if you have a body of work?

Gilberto Villahermosa

What I understand is the larger and more varied your work, the better your chances of representation. I was once told by a producer that if you offer a producer a 30-min SITCOM, he or she will ask if you can turn it into a REALITY TV series - and vice versa. Of course, all this assumes that you have written one really stellar screenplay that really stands our in terms of writing. Producers (and other industry professionals want to know that you have both breadth and depth in terms of screenwriting talent.

Doug Nelson

At least one or more.
