Ray Matsen

Television comedy writer/performer, screenwriter, copywriter cartoonist and animator

Hi. I've done all those things but am primarily a comedy writer. I live in Australia and, over the past 20 years, have worked across tv, radio print, online, and the stage. ‘Mission Brown’ a short film I wrote for a client, based on a very funny story of hers, was recently nominated for ‘Best Comedy Short’ and WON ‘Best International Screenplay’ at The Atlanta Women’s Film Festival 2020. I'm also currently developing several of my own film and narrative tv series ideas. If you'd like help punching up your comedy script, outlining your story, or creating characters for your film or tv series please get in touch.

Hey, Ray Matsen! My name is Kay, I'm the Community Manager here at Stage 32. Nice to meet you! Wow, what an incredible background you have! Congrats on your recent accolades, that's fantastic! What would you say your brand of comedy is?

Since you've got a few scripts in development, definitely reach out to our Director of Script Services, Jason Mirch, who is excellent at matching projects with potential executives (or managers, in your case): J.Mirch@stage32.com

I’m sure you’ve already discovered the Screenwriting Lounge (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/screenwriting), but definitely reach out on the Acting Lounge (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/acting) for insight into characters, dialogue, and even when you want to generate interest in a virtual table read!

Keep in mind that these lounges are like the VIP Filmmaker's Lounges at Film Festivals, so this is where you can meet the people doing the work, get advice on anything you're working on, and/or give back to those who may need advice. We're a very supportive and encouraging community! I think you'd also enjoy my intro blog post on how to engage with the Stage32 Community:

Enjoy exploring the lounges, and don't forget to comment and respond to others’ posts, too! It's the best way to really connect! And, of course, feel free to reach out at any time. Cheers!

Hi Kay.

Thanks for the message. It’s great to be part of Stage 32. I’m really keen to get more involved.

My brand of comedy covers a fairly wide range by necessity. In Australia you have to be able to work on very different projects just to remain employed. I’ve written on everything from Family Feud to surreal narrative series.Im a huge Monty Python fan but two of my favourite films are Back to the Future and When Harry Met Sally. They’re all very different “styles” but I believe at its core all comedy comes from the same place. Trying to make sense of the world. Which, let’s face it, is what all art is about.

I’m very near completion of a 1st draft of my first ( proper) feature which I hope to “ put out there” soon. It’s a fantasy comedy along the lines of ‘Big’ or ‘The Family Man’ (if you know that Nicolas Cage film). I’m writing it for the US market so am pretty excited about that. It would be great to talk to Jason or any of the good folk at Stage 32 once completed.

I will definitely hit the lounges as you said. I’m very much looking forward to connecting with more people.

Thanks again.

Ray
