Screenwriting : How do I get Representation? by Kristina Smith

How do I get Representation?

I have written several scripts that are in a box of totes from short film, to feature length to now my first 2 episodes of TV show. I’ve shot a couple many years ago but made no money, one of them ended up on Amazon which I never got paid for. My actors got big jobs from some of my shoots. Then it dawned on me, I didn’t have any reps, that’s why I got screwed. So how do I get representation?

Representation as what? A screenwriter or a director? Directors get repped for either commercial work or narrative. Sometimes both. Depends. You're more likely to find a rep if you do a lot of commercials as there's more profit for an agency to take from you. Make a commercial reel and send it out. Ways of finding a rep as a screenwriter has been covered here a lot.

Representation as a screenwriter? Write a damn good script.

It sounds like what you need is a lawyer. If you didn't get paid for your work, that's contracts. I don't have an agent or manager, but I have a bunch of credits that I was paid for, plus a bunch of sales and assignments that I was paid for. The lawyer negotiated my contracts - which included performance bumps if my films sold more than the usual amount of videos.

1) Make a list of managers who fit your material.

2) Query them with each new screenplay until they request to read one.

3) Then it's all up to the quality of the work.

4) But also: Work with people who are going to pay you. There are a million people who are fly by nights that you want to avoid.
