Theatre, Sound , and Music

So I’ve just finished a run with a local theatre as a sound designer. In the past I’ve contributed both sound and music. Theatre is a challenging industry to dip your toes in. It is so different than the film industry. During my years of working in theatre I’ve learned so much about design, sound staging, mixing, mics and production.

It’s a entirely different game.

Have you all designed anything for the stage? What challenges have you faced? How has working in theatre helped you with film or game scoring?

Roger Hewett

I've been involved in theatre for a while, most recently creating foley for a radio play. I'm also MD for a Cirque show (once we get up and running again). I find theatre both a wonderful contrast and an asset to film/t.v. scoring. I love the 'live' aspect.

Recently I combined the two, producing a virtual variety show for our local non-profit. I wrote a little dramatic sub-plot for the transitions. The whole show was staged and filmed over the course of a few days. I then took care of editing and sound design (both firsts for me) and some underscore.

It was the first time I've mixed the two worlds together. I find it a great way of thinking 'on your toes'.

Karen "Kay" Ross

Ooo, local theatre is a great way to flex your creativity! It was how I started, and actually, I did sound for live theatre (and quickly switched to lighting).

Kay, I'm so fascinated by lighting design. Our lighting tech brought our production to live and complimented the scenes so well. She was so focused on her craft and making sure the lighting cues and plots were hitting correctly. Lighting is such an important piece of the puzzle.

That's so cool Shanika! I started off in theatre pre-film, it was so collaborative between the actors/directors and me, and I loved how it was slightly different every night and the performances kind of evolved and grew. It's such an addictive way of working, and taught me so much about how integral collaboration is to fruitful creative relationships.
