What are YOU Trying to Capture as a Director?

Caught this short interview with the cast and director of "Eternals". Say what you will about the film, but I love the director's approach - trying to show a little bit of the actor in the character.

What do you hope to capture as a director?

Francisco Trejo

Frankly, I thought it was a valiant effort by Chloe Zhao, the artistic art house film touch is what struck out for me and it’s why I believe some of the negative reviews stem from. I kept reminding myself that it’s a marvel movie but the visuals( with the humongous creature coming out from the sea) was awe inspiring. But Chloe’s vision is that bringing a slew of characters to the forefront with certain humanity and betrayal in aspects.

AGreed, Francisco Trejo - any faults didn't stem from her directing, in my opinion. And I rather enjoyed the relationship that Angelina's character had with her fighting partner - it really reflected the hardships of a caretaker overseeing someone with dimentia.

Debbie Croysdale

Great comment above on director trying to capture a bit of the real person behind their acting. I try to capture that third dimensional being created by both actor and director not only in a way where actor executes instructions perfectly but when a separate entity is born neither of us expected. It’s a kinda fourth dimension some directors will know what I mean. Me, actor, third dimension from our marriage but occasionally third dimension is so powerful it changes the game and directs us.

Michael Adedeji

What was the biggest takeaway from the film was not the action nor lore but Zhao's direction of these actors. The relationship between Angelina's character (THENA) and Don Lee's (GILGAMESH) was so profound and a great example platonic kinship. Then Druïg played by Barry Keogan, who was absolutely in love with his family/ friends. It also passes as a Family drama. Zhao takes the effort to really establish these relationships as the backbone of the film and then alter them completely by the end. It was a unique Marvel film that deserves to be ranked as one of the best, in my opinion.

Hello Karen, I'm bad with computers, can you show me step by step how to put a video up? By the way my video has the dark knight soundtrack, is it okay to put it up, it's one of my college videos

That depends. In a commercial FL film - I strive for the greatest entertainment to the largest number of ticket buying audience. They are not 'passion pieces '; it's a business. There are other films that fall/lean toward 'passion' pieces which require much more emotion and artistic expression that reaches deeper into the audience's personal psyche. They are more commonly less financially viable but can pack a dramatic punch.
