Filmmaking / Directing : Decision to Leave by Geoff Hall

Decision to Leave

I'm looking forward to seeing this film by South Korean Director, Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden, Oldboy). Have any of you seen it?

As a lover of genre-benders, I like the idea of a romance story dressed up as a detective yarn, or is it the other way around? 'Decision To Leave' leads the nominations for this year’s Asian Film Awards (AFA) with 10 nods including best film and best director. What are your favourite genre-benders? Do you have a favourite Park Chan-wook film?

Please let me know when you've watched it. I am dying to discuss this film with someone. The subtleties woven in are absolutely stunning. I hear the screenplay is selling like it was a novel... now to find an English translation. Park Chan-wook has outdone himself with this film, and kept right on brand for his style of romance. It fascinates me that he refers to most of his films as Romances. After reading that it sure gave me a new lens for viewing his work; genre-bending indeed. I love how he has evolved from the gore of Old Boy (not that I don't love that also) into this cinematically gorgeous technique of delivering visual punches to the guts which are uncomfortable and breathtaking all at once. And the way he uses words, even though so much gets lost in translation, is still a masterclass in dialogue.

Christy Fenton yes, Christy, I’m not a fan of his gore fests, like Oldboy, (I’m more into the psychological than gory action) but this one seems to have more about it. I will see where I can see it. There may be an independent cinema in Bristol that will show it? I’m not a subscriber to any of the streaming services that are showing it. I’ll keep you posted,
