Such fun to see the transformation. I thought you'd like to see a couple picture of my living room I dressed for my short film last year...that I made Alexa's office! Once lit, it looked so different than my old living room. Was my only option for a room and it worked.
Art direction is so key. People think it's a DP's job to make a location look great. The light has to come from somewhere and without any sources in the frame we're stuck losing entire walls because we have to "fake a window" or worse light everything from above.
Tips? 1. Lamps with shades, 2.Window dressing (drapes and translucent curtains. Don't use blinds. They suck unless it's a film noir project.) 3.Headboards on all the beds. 4. Nightstands on each side of the bed with lamps. 5. Sofas that are placed in the center of the room, (NOT against a wall). Make sure the sofa has end tables on each side and lamps on them. Hire an art director or set dresser. Well worth it. All of the above will be a given for them.

This a very cool, Maurice Vaughan - thanks for sharing!
You're welcome, Sam Sokolow. Yeah, it's really cool. Hope it gives filmmakers on here some ideas for transforming normal locations into scenes.

As a film director, sometimes I have to just cancel locations at the last minute, but watching this has opened my eyes. Really cool.
Glad the video helps, Melvin Pattern!

Thanks for sharing, Xochi Blymyer! That definitely looks like an office. I wouldn't have known it's really a living room if you didn't tell me.
