Introduce Yourself : What's YOUR Genre? by Leonardo Ramirez 2

Leonardo Ramirez 2

What's YOUR Genre?

Hey Folks! I'm Leonardo Ramirez, a sci-fi/fantasy writer and Stage 32 moderator. I grew up on comics, Star Trek and Star Wars. Every since "Empire Strikes Back" I've thought, "I want to be a part of that, no matter what part it is!"

What's YOUR Genre?

Maurice Vaughan

Hey, Leonardo Ramirez 2. My genres are Horror and Action. I mix genres a lot too.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Hey Maurice Vaughan! I LOVE mixing genres! My most recent piece mixed dystopian with fantasy.

Inessa Kraft

Comedy, feel-good, philosophical, and adventure-driven stories. ✨

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Love it Inessa Kraft . I love stories that are deep and rich but hopeful. And I'll never get away from the action, of course!

Maurice Vaughan

Dystopian stories are interesting to me, Leonardo Ramirez 2. A Fantasy Dystopian is really interesting! I might write a Dystopian script one day.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

What's funny is that I didn't plan or set out to write a dystopian fantasy Maurice Vaughan. It just happened. I had a dream one night and the story played out from beginning to end so I got up the next day and wrote the short which later, turned into a feature.

Vuyolwethu Gwadana

I grew up watching a lot of cartoons and couldn't take my eyes off the television when popeye was on. My genre of choice for the script is a blend of sci-fi and action, dianetics enhanced with mystical arts for optimal screen perfomance execution.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

I hope you do write one Maurice Vaughan.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Interesting Vuyolwethu Gwadana. I don't think I'm capable of writing a script without some action in it.

Maurice Vaughan

I'm already thinking of ideas for a Dystopian script, Leonardo Ramirez 2. I might start with a short script like you did, then turn it into a feature script or TV series.

Vuyolwethu Gwadana

Afterall, the most influencial films ever produced were advanced by technological improvements and the conspiracy of a new world order was to be steered towards a digital war.

Vuyolwethu Gwadana

LeonardoRamirez is action your main focus?

Leonardo Ramirez 2

No Vuyolwethu Gwadana. Primarily scifi/fantasy but with action injected into it. I used to teach martial arts so for some works, there are some martial arts in it but it's not a martial arts movie.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Oh good move Maurice Vaughan. Start with a short. Would love to see how yours turns out!

Vuyolwethu Gwadana

I need some collaborators on my new project too. it has been stagnant for some weeks now. A week ago, I even tried to use the daily reminders to complete the script. Do you know anyone available?

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Not anyone off hand Vuyolwethu Gwadana. I would simply get to know folks here and you'll likely find a like-minded person who writes along the same lines. All of my collaborations have happened organically. I encourage everyone to think relationally first and then collaboration.

Maurice Vaughan

I'll let you know how it turns out, Leonardo Ramirez 2. Thanks for the interest and support.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Yeah definitely Maurice Vaughan. I would really love to see how it turns out!

Vuyolwethu Gwadana

Alright, please check my logline, it is a brand new sci-fi.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Just checked it out Vuyolwethu Gwadana. Honestly, that sounds really good. The only thing I would consider adding is a goal to go along with the stakes. Yes, the annihilation part is there but what does she have to accomplish in order for the world not to be annihilated? I read the synopsis and it doesn't show a goal. Even so, still sounds super interesting!

Vuyolwethu Gwadana

Most certainly, LeonardoRamirez, The goal would be to combine all the necessar resources for all of the acts and find various collabs specializing in various areas of work i.e. music production or a director

Leonardo Ramirez 2

So now I'll have to study up on Georgian mythology James Fleming. That sounds incredibly interesting! And you're right, with so many elements to each of those mythologies, the world building practically builds itself. I'm sure it's still a feat to make the pieces fit together. Nicely done sir!

Leonardo Ramirez 2

You're right Vuyolwethu Gwadana. That's where networking here and building up those relationships will be of great value. We just have to be present enough to authentically nurture those.

Patrick Kovács

STORY, STORY, STORY.

I get 5–6 ultra-short pitches popping into my head every day. I collect them and instantly picture them either on the big screen or streaming. The ones that immediately appear as a movie — with a lead character, a tone, a world — already reveal their genre without me choosing it. So for me, it's not genre first, then story — it's the other way around.

STORY, STORY, STORY.

That’s how you can feel at home in rom-com, thriller, drama, crime, spy, political, western, sci-fi, horror — all of it.

As long as those kinds of films live inside you.

Once your story is clear, you can tell it in a funny, touching, or terrifying way — but the story always leads.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Patrick Kovács You speak the truth sir! Absolutely agree - it's all about the story! It's also great that you get that many downloads (I call them downloads) of pitches in a given day.

Patrick Kovács

Leonardo Ramirez I'll be downloading a few in the coming days and uploading them to the logline section :)

By the way, is there a genre that’s really in demand here?

I mean, it feels like a lot of indie producers instinctively shy away from period pieces or heavy world-building. Horror seems to be a hot pick lately.

There was a time when everyone wanted to give the people a superhero, right?

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh

Hey, Leonardo! As you know I write lots of genres, ranging from drama/romantic comedy/slice of life to epic sci-fi and fantasy, and of course surrealism. I can’t just pick one since I love them all. The only real exceptions are horror and erotica which I’m not a fan of (but I’m weirdly good at writing both lol).

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Patrick Kovács If you don’t mind, please let me know when you download those loglines. I would love to take a look if that’s ok. I think your instincts are correct. Many do shy away from the fantastical world building or period pieces because of the budget involved. Even so, they still happen. My encouragement to anyone who is concerned about that is to write their heart first. That’s what I do and trust that the right people will come along when it’s time. Horror can be done at a low budget, which is probably why it’s so popular.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh I think that’s wonderful. Writing in each of those genres also gives you the ability to mix and match which makes a story unique.

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh

Leonardo Ramirez 2 Thanks yeah, it's very true. Like my series Petal, I genuinely don't know what genre it falls under, since it has sci-fi elements but it's heavily psychological/surreal, and individual entries of course have plenty of drama and some of them have horror elements as well as action/adventure. I like that it's so chaotic it's hard to properly pin it down, it really does run on a bunch of them at once and that's also just really fun to do (even if it does atomic elbow my brain lol).

G.R. Barnett

Fantasy, and animated things. Very niche.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

That sounds intriguing Banafsheh Esmailzadeh. Pieces that are hard to pin down are refreshing. So long as they keep our interest and have a good story, it’ll do well.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Ah, G.R. Barnett animation! Right up my alley! Love it!!

Marina Albert

Same here Leonardo Ramirez 2 - I used to buy a comic every week! The genres that inspire me, are: broad comedy, dramedy and animation - currently polishing a rewrite. Also, have a predilection for historical drama and re-imagining biblical narratives (one of which is a Trilogy that leans into horror). In addition, I've also adapted a one of the biblical scripts into a 7 part graphic novel. Have also written an adventure, grounded dystopian sci-fi and a slasher.

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh

Thanks Leonardo Ramirez 2, definitely :) the series needs a proper rewrite as well as continuation when my novel block lifts lol Finding Elpis also wants very badly to be part of Petal’s extended universe like Level 99 is but I’m resisting as best I can so it’s its own thing. Some of its surrealism still snuck through though ;p

Leonardo Ramirez 2

I remember reading the synopsis of your project “Jezebel” Marina Albert and found it intriguing. And yes, I also have fond memories of walking into a comic shop on a weekly basis and the store owner pulling my “file” as I walked through the door-my weekly comic book pickup that started my weekend. Good memories.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh The best stories take on their own life and guide us where they want us to go.

Linda Corby

Hi Leonardo,

Thanks for the warm energy — love your passion for sci-fi and fantasy (and yes, Empire Strikes Back hits different every time)!

As for genre — I’m Linda Corby, a full-time screenwriter and author with over 50 published works, and my writing tends to blend sci-fi, horror, dark comedy, psychological suspense, and metaphysical weirdness. I definitely gravitate toward stories that are a bit twisted, layered with emotion, and laced with dry, sarcastic humor.

I’m currently developing a trilogy called Fat Gobblers — a genre-bending horror-sci-fi series filled with transformation, alien invasion, erotic tension, and a healthy dose of WTF. It’s being written both as a screenplay and novel series.

So in short: Sci-fi/horror/psychological/satirical mashups — that's my strange and beautiful lane!

Looking forward to connecting more here on Stage 32!

— Linda

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Sounds fun Linda Corby! Kinda reminds me a little of Gremlins! I’ll have to check out your loglines.

Suzanne Bronson

So I'm not a writer, but my genre is Sci-fi. Hands down. Star Trek is everything. Though I argue, Leonardo, from a story structure point of view, Star Wars is fantasy not science fiction. It's the same as TLOTR just in space. Maybe actually what they call space opera.

Suzanne Bronson

And I love Sci-fi/Horror. Alien is my favorite horror franchise. So excited for the new series!

Suzanne Bronson

Like Book of Eli MAURICE? And The Road.

Maurice Vaughan

More like a Dystopian Alice in Wonderland, Suzanne Bronson.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

“Book of Eli” is one of my all-time favorite movie Suzanne Bronson. And yes, wholeheartedly agree that Star Wars is fantasy. Good to see you my friend!

Eusebio De Sales

H!! My Name is Eusebio De Sales ,a sci-fi/fantasy writer . I grew up watching Anime like Dragon ball or Saint Seiya. (universe adventures & Greek Myth Wars)

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Very cool Eusebio De Sales. I've not watched "Saint Seiya" so I'll have to check it out. Some of the first anime I every watched was "Gachaman" in the American version known as "Battle of the Planets" or "G-Force". I also loved "Starblazers".

Eusebio De Sales

Cool !! Those are amazing anime , and yes you will love Saint Seiya its about holy wars but its not in the past its in the present era (1990 to 1998 aprox took place) Athena vs Hades then poseidon and in the manga the next opponent is Zeus

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Ok cool, I'll check it out Eusebio De Sales. Thanks!

Patrick Kovács

Leonardo Ramirez, I’m still uploading pitches to the logline section today, happy to share them with you.

Yes, period films — like any other — can be produced smartly. I even make a sport out of it: if something looks like it needs a $100 million budget and can’t get made because of that, I’m happy to rework it. The audience needs to be entertained, and a small detail like money shouldn’t stand in our way :)

Leonardo Ramirez 2

I just read all of the loglines Patrick Kovács and I can definitely see a positive pattern of crafting stories that speak to the soul and grant us a chance to look inwards. Very nicely done!

John X. Ingram

This is an interesting question. I'm not entirely sure if I have a specific genre to pinpoint. Perhaps contemporary fantasy as I tend to write in that sphere the most, but I also don't stay within that - or am inspired by that - when engaging with works.

Lawrence Whitener

Whenever an L.A. Producer asks me that, my answer always angers them in disbelief.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Sounds like a hybrid of genres John X. Ingram.

Imola Orbán

Great question! Well, I used to like children's movies like Tom and Jerry (2021) or Smurfs (1-2). But I prefer sci-fi now, my favorite YA books are from this genre, I loved 2001: A Space Odyssey movie, and I'm currently watching the Interstellar, I love it! Oh, and I have a lot of science fiction ideas, so I'll probably become a sci-fi film director and writer. I think I got my love for sci-fi from my dad. :D

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Ok Imola Orbán - your comment just won my heart. Not just because of the sci-fi movies but because of the love of it shared with your dad. I have a daughter that I share a love of comics with so we bond a lot over that. It means SO much to me that she'll carry on that love. Thank you so much Imola for sharing. Best comment of the day!!!

Renae Richardson

Horror: My first horror film was Night of the Living Dead by George Romero. My first horror book was Christine by Stephen King." I have been in love with horror forever. Long live the legacy of these legends.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

I think “Firestarter” was the first King movie I ever saw Renae Richardson.

Renae Richardson

Leonardo Ramirez 2 I am such a fan;

it came out in 1984, I believe and I watched it when I was seven.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

I remember that well Renae Richardson. “Christine” and “Cujo” scared me a bit much. But I really liked “Firestarter”.

Kat Spencer

Hi Leonardo Ramirez 2 - It seems we grew up with the same things! I was always more of a Trekkie than a Star Wars fan, but that has shifted. Now they are about equal. I never realized how philosophical Star Wars was until I read the books. My genre is fantasy/romance/adventure with a little bit of mystery.

Sven Kühbauch

Looks like we are on the same page. Live long and prosper

Angelo Kourmatzis

Live long and prosper, my fellow writers! I'd love to write a scifi movie one day. I also like horror, westerns, adventure stories and I love a great mystery/film noir

Yaşar Taşbaş

mostly working in science fiction, drama, and philosophical storytelling. My genre blends grounded sci-fi with emotionally complex characters and existential questions. I love exploring not just what might happen—but why it matters to us as humans. Right now, I'm developing a feature screenplay titled Blackout Protocol, a climate-thriller that weaves together political corruption, geoengineering, and personal loss. It’s my way of asking: "If the world were ending slowly, who would pretend to save it—and who would really profit from it?"

Sci-fi, to me, isn’t just about the future—it’s about confronting the present through imagination. Looking forward to connecting with everyone here!

Leonardo Ramirez 2

I think I've found my peeps! I'm with you Kat Spencer - although I haven't read any of the Star Wars books, I have read a ton of Trek. I thought "The Return" would have been a really good sequel to "Generations". Live long and prosper Sven Kühbauch and Angelo Kourmatzis And Yaşar Taşbaş - I love your approach in exploring the "why"!

Ergi Cela

Hi Leonardo Ramirez 2My favorite genre is action-thriller, and I’ve recently finished writing a feature-length screenplay. It was a challenging but incredibly enjoyable experience, and I’d love to share it with you if you're open to it.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

I love action thriller pieces Ergi Cela so congratulations on finishing! We have amazing executives here on Stage 32 that provide great coverage. They've been a huge help to me if you want to check it out at :https://www.stage32.com/scriptservices/coverage
