Well written shows

I'm wondering what some of your favorites are. I noticed in the OWAs that I haven't seen most of the shows they are inspired by. I guess I need to watch a lot more tv, lol. I thought I already watch too much! I really loved the writing on Black Sails. From beginning to end it had strong character development, good story, and a really beautiful ending. Which series do you like the writing enough to recommend?

CJ Walley

Here's my recommendations for good writing. A lot of these shows go under the radar because they are a little too heavy for the average viewer:

Patriot

Outer Range

Deadloch

Swarm

Fleabag

Homecoming

Undone

Andrew Howard

Second Patriot 100% and Black Sails is awesome. Would add some more gems in: Banshee, Loudermilk, Lodge 49, Devs, Zero Zero Zero and The Deuce

Stefano Pavone

Red Dwarf

Blake's 7

Galaxy Express 999

Queen Millennia

Space Pirate Captain Harlock

Space Battleship Yamato

Maurice Vaughan

Fallout, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Yellowjackets, and The Last of Us to name a few, Zarya Bintz.

Pat Alexander

I'd toss Beef, Landman, Andor, and Mare of Easttown into the hat as well!

Zarya Bintz

Yay, a whole bunch of shows to get started on! Thanks! I also love Red Dwarf Stefano Pavone and Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul Maurice Vaughan I'm looking forward to the next season of Fallout. Hoping it stays solid.

Marie Hatten

I favor films over series but Adolescence, Baby Reindeer, All of us are dead, Nobody wants this .

Some more of my favorites for the writing/story, in no particular order, are Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Doctor Who(I'm a longtime Whovian:), Hunter X Hunter, Death Note, Hannibal, Avatar:The Last Air Bender, Mr Robot, Ozark, Supernatural, Dark, Money Heist, and Watchmen.

Adam, this is how to make a pitch resonate. Clearly you know your subject and can expound on its entertainment value. With such an engaging opener, "What Stories Owe Us," I can't imagine why it would not capture the attention of creative management (especially in your genre), as well as creative minds open to entertainment’s changing landscape. Seems I’m right, your enlightening views sparked lots of feedback.

Zarya do you have a character preference from Red Dwarf?

Shirley Beatty Collier

Thanks to everyone who answered my question. I just created a Word fact sheet with the help of AI about characters and stories new to me. Let me know if you want me to share. I tossed in a few that we all know too.

As a previous development exec, I spent years training myself to watch as many on-air shows as possible, and now it’s such a habit that I can’t break the routine even if I try. Part of the job was making sure I always knew what was already out there, what audiences were responding to or rejecting, and, maybe most importantly, having my own thoughts on why something worked or didn’t work. That awareness often helped me position our projects for buyers, spot shifts in audience trends, and keep an eye on rising writers, directors, and actors who might be perfect for something we were developing.

I also make myself watch across genres, even when something isn’t naturally my taste. Prestige dramas, procedurals, sitcoms, YA, limited series, absurd comedies, genre pieces, thrillers, international projects, animation, anime, even unscripted, I try to study all of it. And even when I don’t like something, or I’m not the obvious audience for it, I still look for what does work and why it resonates for so many people. That mindset has ended up being one of the most valuable parts of my toolkit.

Because of that, I’ve collected a long list of favorites over the years. Some of the shows I think are exceptionally well written include: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Band of Brothers, The OA, Orphan Black, Arcane: League of Legends, Attack on Titan, Dark, Battlestar Galactica (2000s remake), The Haunting of Hill House, Halt and Catch Fire, Lost, Money Heist, Silo, From, Watchmen, Hannibal, Dark Matter, For All Mankind, Never Have I Ever, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Outer Banks, Malcolm in the Middle, and Boy Meets World.

That's a great question, and Black Sails is a perfect example of stellar writing. It's impossible to watch everything, but studying a few shows for their specific strengths is incredibly valuable.

Shirley Beatty Collier Cat is my favorite but every character is pretty perfect in RedDwarf

Zarya Bintz

Ashley Renée Smith that's a nice list! I agree watching and learning is always worth the time. I also watch some reality shows. I can't bring myself to watch some of them though lol...

CJ Walley

I just finished Midnight Mass and it's possibly the best written TV series (limited) I've seen.
