Screenwriting : New Year, New Thing by Maurice Vaughan

Maurice Vaughan

New Year, New Thing

Happy New Year, everyone! What’s something new you want to do this year? Write a short script, film a movie, pitch live, submit to a screenplay contest, go to a networking event, etc.

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh

It’s not really new for me but I do want to write a lot more action this year. Hoping against hope that this means I can get back to work writing Seed lol

Tony Ray

I want to get a script or two sold and I want to film the short I wanted to film last year.

Vital Butinar

Happy new year to you too Maurice Vaughan! I hope you have fun, successful and productive 2026!

Rose Dupuis

Hi Maurice Vaughan, For me character research is consuming my time right now and I am taking the screen readers training program with Hollywood gate keeper and Carolyn Carpenter to write coverages for unproduced scripts.

Just a bit of trivia if you follow the Chinese New Year it will be the year of the Fire Horse.

Warren Edward Foster

Happy New Year Maurice,

I would like to write a short script this year.

Darshan Jaju

Happy New Year Maurice Vaughan I intend to rewrite my old script, I have a few ideas that I think can make it more compelling.

Billy Kwack

Hey Maurice, definitely more short stories and trying other genres

John Fife

Happy New Year!

Maurice Vaughan

That's great, Banafsheh Esmailzadeh. I mainly write Action (and Horror). If you ever want any tips, let me know.

Maurice Vaughan

Hope you sell your scripts and make your short film, Tony Ray! I'm looking forward to watching your short!

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks, Vital Butinar. Happy New Year! Hope you have a fun, successful, and productive year too!

Maurice Vaughan

Hi, Rose Dupuis. That's great! Watch out for those research rabbit holes. :)

Maurice Vaughan

Happy New Year, Warren Edward Foster! What genre is your short script going to be?

Maurice Vaughan

Happy New Year, Darshan Jaju! It's great to rewrite old scripts with the new knowledge we have. I'm thinking about rewriting a really old script. I think it's the first or second script I ever wrote. Hope the rewrite goes great!

Maurice Vaughan

Hey, Billy Kwack. Cool. Looking forward to hearing more about your short stories!

Maurice Vaughan

Happy New Year, John Fife! Hope you're doing great and you reach your goals this year!

Marie Hatten

Hey Maurice Vaughan I want to write my feature, submit it for feedback and write a written pitch. It will all be new for me. I need that fire horse energy Rose Dupuis !

Meriem Bouziani

Plan is simple: I have to finish my script, then send it to any opportunity that comes my way, haha.

Imola Orbán

Hey Maurice,

In 2026, I want making short films! :)

Maurice Vaughan

Hey, Marie Hatten. Fire horse energy. :D I'm rooting for you to reach your goals! Stage 32 has feedback services I suggest checking out (www.stage32.com/scriptservices).

Maurice Vaughan

Hope you reach your goals, Meriem Bouziani! You're active on Stage 32. That'll help you find opportunities.

Maurice Vaughan

Hey, Imola Orbán. That's great. How long do you think your short films will be?

Imola Orbán

Maurice Vaughan I'm not sure, but maybe 1-10 minutes

Maurice Vaughan

That's a great range for short films, Imola Orbán! Let me know when your movies come out.

David Horton

Maurice Vaughan Happy New Year! Thanks for posting. So many things I want to work on this year. Film a short I co-wrote, finish my feature, collaborate more, get better at time management! And lastly, get financing to cover the costs of filmmaking!

Maurice Vaughan

Happy New Year, David Horton! You're welcome. I should add getting better at time management as a goal. Hope you reach your goals! I'm looking forward to seeing the short and hearing more about your projects!

Rose Dupuis

Hey Maurice, so Rabbit Holes hmmm. Need input I don't know about those rabbit holes. could they be those 2am get out of bed to write moments?

Cynna Ael

This year I want to do more of the same as last year, but also- I'd love to see myself make a short film on iphone or use my small camera I have. The idea being-- just seeing it come to life- even if it's for my own portfolio-- so I can see how to better learn and grow. Also, I want to learn more about the producer side of things.

Maurice Vaughan

Rose Dupuis In my experience, the rabbit holes are when I go to research things and end up researching too much about them and researching other things that won't be in the script.

Maurice Vaughan

I've heard of other members making short films on their iphones, Cynna Ael. You could get advice in the Filmmaking/Directing Lounge (www.stage32.com/lounge/directing).

Rose Dupuis

Ah yes Maurice, those rabbit holes, found my way out for now. Entrepreneurial mind set and the internet I find I can now avoid most of them.

Maurice Vaughan

Research rabbit holes could be an idea for a script, Rose Dupuis. Or a scene in a script.

Juliana Philippi

Maurice Vaughan Feliz 2026!!! Screenwriting wise, 2026 is the year of getting my two scripts getting traction, optioned and sent off to preproduction and alignment for life, get them out there and shot! And the writing whatever story needs to come through my voice.

Maurice Vaughan

Hi, Juliana Philippi. Feliz 2026! Hope you sell your scripts and they get made this year!

Marie Hatten

Helpful as always thanks Maurice Vaughan

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Marie Hatten.

David Taylor

This year I think I might take a shower. It's been a while. If I buy waterproof paper, I could write in there too. It's probably the only place I haven't yet.

CJ Walley

The only plan I have is to develop a really good horror franchise idea I've had. As ever, I start the year with the mentality I detail here.

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks for the article, CJ Walley. I'll check it out. Looking forward to hearing more about your Horror franchise!
