Screenwriting : Structure, Structure, Structure by Anthony McBride

Anthony McBride

Structure, Structure, Structure

I'm working on my next sci-fi script and am revisiting one of the main aspects of scriptwriting--structure.

I need to figure out which one to use and how to apply it to the sci-fi genre. I need to figure out the chracter structure. i need to figure out the structure for villain as well.

Ughhh!

Question: What structure models do you use and how do you apply them to your work?

Eric Christopherson

I keep it simple, use Syd Field's structure. I usually start writing when I have the inciting incident and the end of the first act plot point, sometimes the midpoint too. I like to discover the rest of the structure as I go. The output feels more organic to me that way.

Michael David

It all depends on the "whys." Why are people watching this movie, what experience or sense do they want to get out of it? Is it about solving a puzzle? Experiencing a new world? Grappling with a dilemma? The question of "Why are people watching this" will dictate the necessities of your structure.
