Screenwriting : Your ALL TIME favorite Charater by Libby Wright

Your ALL TIME favorite Charater

Hello there! Hope you've had the chance to jump into Introduce Yourself Weekend. If not, there's still time.

So I have a question for you.... In YOUR opinion, what was THE GREATEST charater ever written for screen in the last 10 years, and why? What about them stood out to you? Did you love them, hate them? What about their charater "stood out" above the rest?

Emmanuel Jomy

I’m a really big fan of Ethan Hunt, but if I had to choose one of the most perfectly written characters in the last decade, it would be Arthur Fleck.

What really stood out to me was how deeply psychological and uncomfortable his journey felt. You don’t just watch him—you slowly understand him, even when you know you shouldn’t. That balance between empathy and fear is what made the character so powerful. It’s the kind of writing that stays with you long after the film ends, I guess. What's your favorite character??

David Taylor

Probably MRS MAISEL, stunningly written, expertly performed, very witty, lively and dynamic and beautifully period presented. But a 10-year limit is tough. Prior to that quite a few characters stick out.

Michael Dzurak

My personal fave of mine is a soldier who was captured, turned into a cybernetic mutant by the enemy, but then after the conflict his own side conscripts him into being a super-soldier when all he wants is his humanity back and, in fact, has vivid memories of that time.

Alex Bridge

Well, I loved Cersei Lannister from GOT. She embodies the dark anti-hero: sharp, ruthless, and fully aware of who she is. She neither seeks redemption nor excuses: she chooses power and defends it at any cost. Her choices blend self-preservation, revenge, and a distorted form of love. She commits atrocities in the name of protection, making her both monstrous and strangely human.

Like our world.

Alone against everyone, trusting no one, she fights even when defeat is inevitable, until her final breath.

Oleg Mullayanov

Alex Bridge completely agrees with you, she is very cold and cruel, I especially remember her in the last episode of the sixth season, when she finally came to power, killing the lords for the iron throne. And what about me? I really liked Logan Roy from succession. His attitude towards children is also very significant for the series. He has everything: helicopters, money, a company, cars, mansions, but he never got along well with his children.

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh

I don’t know about the last ten years since I tend to ignore most stuff that came out after 2015. But one of my absolute favourites is probably Walter White, aka Heisenberg. Such a complex character, very weak and unassuming on the surface but unbelievably calculating and ruthless at his core, wins against bigger and more overtly dangerous foes using his genius intellect. Even though he’s a terrible guy, you can’t help rooting for him.

JR Rodriguez

Kasi Lemmons's Harriet Tubman. The twist and turns are wonderfully jarring(The different world's she has to live in) and it doesn't hurt Cynthia Erivo takes on the role. Frankly, I thought it never received the notice it deserved.

Michael David

I don't know about the last ten years, but in my opinion, HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey is the greatest character ever written for screen.

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh

Thanks Michael David~ I'm slowly catching up on the classics lol

Darrell Pennington

Libby Wright I love these types of posts EVEN THOUGH it is impossible for me to choose 'bests', 'favorites' etc...Christoph Waltz's Hans Landa (outside the 10 year time frame as well)is a constant reference point for me. Within the 10 year timeframe, Gary Valentine (played by Cooper Hoffman) was incredibly memorable in Licorice Pizza and Cristin Milioti in The Penguin was otherworldly.

The Oscars need to prepare a new category for next year, BEST SUPPORTING ROCK

Thank you everyone- you've given me some Excellent new material to study!!!

Heidi Schussman

Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) in Call The Midwife is a masterful portrayal of an elderly woman who is brilliant, childish, and senile.

Michael Dzurak

For some reason (probably too much screen time), I read "charater ever written" as "charater YOU'VE ever written."

To answer the original question... here's one example: Michael Bryce in The Hitman's Bodyguard and he's paired with Darius Kincade. I found it a hilarious take on the buddy film and the competent agent trope. They're both super competent but in totally different ways. The chemistry is superb. The original script has a different but equally cool take on Kincaid. Recommended watch and read.
