Introduce Yourself : First Impressions Are A Funny Thing by Nick Dobrowolski

First Impressions Are A Funny Thing

My name is Nick Dobrowolski. I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, in a small town just outside of Philadelphia. I attended and graduated from Germantown Friends School and Temple University, both of which are in Philadelphia, and the city holds a very special place in my heart. It's a blue-collar city, filled with some of the most genuine, kind-hearted, and passionate people that you'll ever meet. It's a college town. It's a sports town. It's an artsy town. It's a tough town. All of these things are ingrained into the culture of the city and it gets into your veins, your blood, your bones. It's part of you. I'm writing this because I want to make it clear that the area that I grew up in, the culture that I grew up in, it defines quite a bit about my character. I never really thought about becoming an actor until a couple of years ago. Now, it's really all I want to do. I've been in a few short films and am working on cutting a reel together from that footage, but here are two things that I think sum up what I want to do going forward in my life. The first was a short named Blind Tag that was made for the action film challenge. I play David DiGiovanni, who is the villain, which is something I've desperately wanted to do for awhile in terms of acting because I'm normally thrown into the leading man type roles: http://youtu.be/Ju3gmwQWCdQ The following is my take on an interview in 1976 with then Philadelphia Flyers captain Bobby Clarke. I've played hockey since I was a young kid. It's definitely my favorite sport and the Flyers are my team. During the 1970s they were dubbed the Broad Street Bullies, and there has never been a more prototypical Flyer than Bobby Clarke. Rob Zombie wants to make a film about this era of the team, and I did this sort of as an audition, but also as a character study. I worked the voice, the accent, the inflection, the mannerisms and it was a lot of fun to try to embody this man for a short period of time, but it's also important to note that I'm not left-handed and my voice doesn't naturally reside in his register or resonance. Anyway here is both the original interview: http://youtu.be/t1IEzIK6ZAc And mine: http://youtu.be/O9TTbHUeLPc Feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Richard "RB" Botto

Great post, Nick...Thanks for sharing. I'll even forgive you for being a Flyers fan ;)

Nick Dobrowolski

Thanks Richard! I appreciate you being able to forgive me. Right now, I'd like to forgive them since it's pretty tough to watch them at the moment. Anyway, thanks for the comment and for welcoming me to the site. I'm glad there's a good community to come to and get feedback as well as just talk about all things in this realm of entertainment. Also, what team are you a fan of in the NHL?

Nick Dobrowolski

Thanks very much Kathryn. I think Sean Monahan is going to be a big deal in Calgary for a long time, but I'd love to see Johnny Gaudreau make the team in the next couple of years. I really do love an underdog story and he's a lifelong Flyers fan too I believe.

Nick Dobrowolski

Iginla is a guy I think everyone loves. He's been a model of consistency, loyalty, and good play at both ends of the rink. I do think it was time for him to move on from Calgary, but he's a guy who will always be a Flame. Gaudreau is sort of like Danny Briere. He had a stellar WJC this past year and took over games at times offensively. Thing is, he's a tiny little guy, but it's not like Nathan Gerbe, Martin St. Louis, and Danny Briere haven't been effective in the NHL. I'm pulling for him.

Pat Savage

Hockey talk at Stage 32! Welcome to Stage 32 Nick! Good luck with all you do and dream and have fun and great success networking here! Go Detroit :)

Nick Dobrowolski

Thanks a lot Pat! It should be fun. It'll be interesting to see how the Red Wings do in the East this year. They made some nice pickups in the off season in Alfredsson and Weiss. They're always a good team but I wonder how they'll match up against Boston and Toronto later in the year.

Krystol Diggs

Hello, Nick! My mom lives in Philadelphia and I can't get into it. I don't know places for one. But, good luck on all of your endeavors.

Richard "RB" Botto

This turned into a hockey thread? Fantastic. Nick, to answer your question, I am a long suffering (save for 94) Ranger fan. So, if there was ever a reason to feel better about your start, well....

Unkle Rikoe

keep up the good work..love th eintro

Unkle Rikoe

make more like it

William Cooper

Very good job Nick ,I think if you speed up your dialog and maybe do some pushups right before you do the interview to get your heart rate up you'd be even better .I played hockey in the area before the Flyers won the Cup not too many people can say that

Benjamin Alany

Welcome, Nick! Great intro. Sounds like you came to the same conclusion I did. I'm a relative newcomer on the scene as well, started in 2009 as an extra, and just kept ramping it up, as I was drawn in more and more, and allowed myself to believe in this dream. Now, there's nothing else I'd rather do, though it's tough getting started. Agents in my area only seem to want "lead" types, being a character actor with a specialized look is a hard sell. Anyway, best of luck to you in your endeavors. Sounds like you are on the right track, short film is what I'm pursuing as well these days.

Nick Dobrowolski

Krystol: you have to visit the city and get someone to show you around, it really is a great place. Thanks so much! Richard: I'd feel bad for you, but for the past three years, the Rangers beat the Flyers every game. Gotta love Hank and Callahan though and thy defense corps is amazing. I'm curious to see how Vigneault will do in the East and Torts in the West. Should be a fun year. I'm not crazy about the new alignment, but it is what it is. Rikoe: thanks for watching and saying hello! I'll have to get more work up here for sure. William: I completely agree with getting my heart rate up and speeding up my speech. Clarkie talks so fast in this interview it's ridiculous. And that's awesome! Where did you play? Rizzo is probably my favorite rink, despite the teeny-tiny size. I liked the rink on Old York Road in Elkins Park as well. Benjamin: I totally hear you and the reason I'm focusing on doing shorts is to kind of feel different parts out, as well as building a reel/resume. It's also great for networking, but it's nice to get a taste of things for sure. I got really lucky and have been working with some excellent filmmaking students at the Art Institute of Tampa here in Florida. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. It's nice to have a community and even nicer to have people want to continue a conversation.

Luz Lenoir

Welcome to Stage 32! Philly is a great place for film. Unfortunately, Harrisburg is not. I'm sure you will love it here!

Krystol Diggs

I need to make friends with someone who can show me around philly.

Nick Dobrowolski

Well Luz, I actually hang out near Tampa, Florida these days, but I'm hoping to get back near the Philly area soon. Krystol: you definitely do. It's amazing.

Greg Roland

Hey Nick so you are in Florida we should hook up and collaborate, got all the toys.

Nick Dobrowolski

Greg, sounds good. I'm near Tampa. Where do you reside?

Greg Roland

Hey nick im in Hollywood.

William Cooper

My home Ice was Uplands Rink in Unionville Chester County where l lived as a child. I have skated at Rizzo, it is a neat little outdoor rink.
