SUMMER WINE
By Marina Albert

GENRE: Drama, Family
LOGLINE:

During a visit to the family's cherry orchard, a girl on the cusp of womanhood learns her mother is dying. Saving the orchard from foreclosure inadvertently brings her dysfunctional family together.

SYNOPSIS:

Eolande Samain, 40s, is determined to make this summer one to remember. If she can only tear her two daughters away from their usual summer exploits and entice them to help her make cherry wine. More than that, she’ll be continuing a legacy. Her eldest Ella, 17, refuses to spend yet another summer working the family orchard in Puglia. A place where time stands still holds no interest for the London based clubber. With harvest time around the corner, the proprietors, Eolande’s stalwart brother Alwyn Samain, 50, and Tamara 48, his Italian born, frugal wife cook up a plan to make it appear as though nothing’s changed since Eolande’s last visit. They pull out all stops to Eolande discovering that her cherry orchard is diseased and that Alwyn’s has been quietly replanted with Eolande’s hard earned coin. Tamara is pushed to the brink - tending young cherry saplings from dawn to dusk and now having three extra mouths to feed.

Alwyn picks up his tribe in Milan in his hooptie, Gladys. He’s missed his girls, but there‘s a paleness to his sister that doesn‘t escape him. He dare not ask, staying tight-lipped over his own secrets of facing foreclosure. Ella snubs the red carpet welcome, to call lensman to the stars Vince Barlow. The girls’ forty something father preps for an upcoming fashion show in Milan. Despite Ella‘s apathy to the family breaking bread over dinner - Eolande’s youngest, Bree, 7, is in her element in the rustic surrounds. En route to Milan, Vince fields calls from Eolande’s GP. She hasn’t rolled up for her test results and her diagnosis is extremely pressing. That’s the first he’s heard of it. As Eolande’s primary contact, Vince burns her phone up with messages. When there’s no response, he makes a life changing decision - to forego the show and commit to his family. Bored out of her mind, Ella takes out her frustration and Eolande’s increasing frailty on Vince, which inadvertently gives him the Samain’s location via Ella’s location app.

In the dead of night, Eolande discovers her parcel is dead and Alwyn’s been reduced by half, due to disease. To break even, they need to sell their entire stock. Desperate, Eolande hires Tamara’s nephews to help with stomping. Tamara takes out her own grievances on her parents - buried on the property - wishing they had cultivated olives, figs or lemons. Anything other than cherries - which are prone to disease. Her great-aunt’s recent passing adds to Ella’s misery. She had a soft spot for Gina and spends the hot summer nights on their gravestone. Eolande benches the idea of forcing her girls to help. With the future of the orchard at stake, she calls on sheer grit and Alwyn’s tireless help to produce their unique Summer Wine in time for market. But selling it proves more difficult than in previous years. The crowd are fickle. Vince arrives by cab and secretly cuts a deal with the Gelato stall vendor by lining his pockets - in exchange for sending his patrons to the Samain stall. After all, who wouldn’t want gelato topped with tangy cherry liqueur? Vince reunites with Eolande and Bree - gifting his babybug a fluffy toy rabbit. Alwyn’s uncertain of Vince’s non-commital ways, but his doubts are quickly assuaged after every bottle is sold. All thanks to Vince.

Back at the property, Ella watches over the last batch of fermented wine. She siphons fermented wine out of a barrel - before drinking too much. Willing to prove herself to Eolande and her bestie back home, but more so to the deceased ‘Gina’ - she skips several steps in the

winemaking process. The family arrive to carnage - essentially to bottles of undrinkable pulp. They labour through the night to save the final batch. Vince’s powers of persuasion to get Eolande to keep her doctor’s appointment fall flat - she insists her legacy comes before her health. Eolande won’t admit it, but she suspects the worst. The blurred vision and frailty has only increased since her arrival. Determined to see through the felling and replanting of her dead orchard. All but her very first sapling - the dead giant - leaving it untouched, signifying where she gave birth to Ella, beneath Ella’s initials carved into the trunk. The second batch is a sell out, but not enough to keep the property from foreclosure.

Tamara reveals the official bank documents threatening foreclosure, but Alwyn’s determined to pay back the bank and continue the legacy. With time running out, Tamara begins packing two generations of belongings into boxes. A disturbing phone call from an old friend who claims she can’t find Tamara’s parents’ graves in the local cemetery and insists on a please explain, that throws Tamara off the deep end. Ella is stunned to discover her mother’s near death. She hid

it so well. Vince looks after the girls, leaving Alwyn time alone with his bedridden sister. His promise to keep their orchard alive at any personal cost is music to her ears. Vince leads his girls in a moving tribute to their beloved mother. Her dying wish was to be buried by the giant cherry tree…

.... and in falling rain, Ella digs Eolande’s grave - a girl shattered into a million pieces. Alwyn steers the tractor with Eolande’s casket (built by Vince) to the edge of the trench. Vince pulls Ella out of the muddy trench, before they ease the casket into its rightful resting place, beside the giant cherry. Bree points out a timely double rainbow, marking the occasion. Tamara fends off two policemen - here to search the grounds for an illegal gravesite. Her friend delivered on her threat, but Tamara puts on the performance of her life to save her parents’ legacy - leading them on a wild goose chase before Alwyn, Vince, Ella and Bree lend a helping hand. They don‘t discover Tamara’s parents’ grave, but sniff out Eolande‘s freshly dug one.

The Samains are threatened with eviction until Ella invites them to taste a glass of Summer Wine. The few bottles she hid behind Gina and Stefano’s grave, prove to be their saving grace.Vince records two drunken policemen - threating to expose them, which forces their swift retreat. Tamara presents Ella with the key to the bungalow. It’s hers if she wants it - now that Vince has generously paid off the mortgage. Inspired by her mother’s work ethic, Ella throws herself into the art of winemaking.

After all summer’s not over and there are cherry saplings to look after.
