How can I be a confident writer?

I'm not confident in my work at all. I feel like I suck, I'm horrible and nothing I do is ever good enough. This has affected my ability to complete scripts and sometimes even blog posts because I agonize over everything. People used to tell me my scripts are trash and ever since I became obsessed with being perfect and I don't know what to do anymore

Jon Shallit

Exchange scripts and talk about them. You will see everyone has doubts. Keep running or you will get out of shape.

John Royan

Hi Zorrawa,

It sounds to me like you have the makings of a good writer. From what I've learned they're all critical of their own work. I have the same doubts, so know that you're not alone, and keep writing.

Anthony Moore

There's no such thing a a perfect script. There will never be perfection because you can't please everyone. You write, rewrite, get feedback, and start again. You read and practice and get tips. If a...

How to know what to cut out of a script

A couple of years ago I had a script reader read one of my scripts, the script was 139 pages. The script reader said it was a great story with good plot and good twists, and gave me a score of 7.0 with a consider. However, they hinted at a higher score would have been given if some characters were r...

I find it really helpful to look at each scene and figure out what its purpose is (is it exposition or is it driving the plot forward) and what has changed after the scene has ended. Also just going t...

You need to figure out which parts of your story are most important. Good luck.

I'm struggling with my revisions

Hi, everyone. I've had a stressful time screenwriting lately. I've been working on a horror script for the past four years now, and I felt like I was so close to completing the FINAL final draft. However, after doing some soul-searching and reviews of my story, I still feel like there's a lot I need...

Sounds to me like the issue is psychological and you already know that, Anthony. You're suffering self doubt that's tying you in knots.

In the creative arts, this typically comes from far too much intr...

Worry less about being unique and more about being a solid story. Look at the movie 'Terrifier'. The premise is not unique, but it's well done and entertaining! Which is why they are on the third movie!

In terms of the self-doubt, it might help to realize that this is THE job. Writing the first draft is like 10% of the job. Everything after that is the muck nobody talks about but takes up the most ti...

Developing Side-Characters

I'm still working on revising my horror script, "The Shadows," and my biggest challenge right now is developing my side characters and giving them enough to do to support the main protagonist's journey while experiencing their own journeys and personal growth. However, I don't want to make my script...

Without having read your script, my recommendation would be to combine 2 (or more) characters. I've found that oftentimes that supporting characters are usually there to serve the story (especially in horror) so if you can find a way to simplify that as much as you can it might help!

CJ Walley

At a story level, your side characters are really just a soundboard for your main protagonist. They don't have to have their own journey and growth, just reinforce your heroes in various ways such as...

Sometimes merging characters is a good solution to this. It can make several one-dimensional characters into a smaller number of multi-faceted ones

Horror Music Ideas

Hi everyone. As I continue to revise my horror script, "The Shadows," I was wondering if anyone can help me find a classical jazz song (preferably in the public domain) that can create an eerie atmosphere for a particular scene (think "Midnight, the Stars, and You" in "The Shining"). I know screenwr...

not jazz but listen to how Philip Glass uses a simple motif well to create Helen's theme in Candyman.

As someone already mentioned, the awkwardness really is not due to the music itself, but to the incongruity of the music and the picture.

Kerry Kennard

I like Andre’s idea - Philip Glass might have some

Interesting motifs / dissonance to clarity / consonance sounds/ movements.

Remember studying P. Glass in one of my

Masters programs.

Hi, everyone! I know it's been a while. I've been hard at work revising my horror script, "The Shadows." I'm proud of many of the changes I've made so far. I just got feedback for my horror script from one of my contacts. While they claim to like the soul of my script, they still said it needs a lot of improvement.
