By John Kerr

GENRE: Thriller
LOGLINE:

A once famous writer attempting to make a comeback and dealing with writer’s block takes up residence in artist’s retreat Victorian in northern CA where he finds much more than a renaissance of creativity.

SYNOPSIS:

Jack Doyle, a once famous writer of novels and feature films is trying to make a comeback after spending years in the literary wilderness. Faced with writer's block and ghosts from his past, brought on by the recent death of his sister, Jack decides to take up residence in the Canaan Lodge, an aging Victorian in the Shasta Lake area of northern CA. Listed as an "artist's retreat" Jack feels a change of scenery from his Los Angeles home is what is needed to get the creative juices flowing.

The lodge turns out to be exactly what Jack needed. Sitting high in the mountains of CA's former gold and timber country the sagging Victorian sits yards away from a beautiful lake. Jack is knocking out pages in no time. He also discovers that the lodge has a long history dating back to the Gilded Age of the 1890's. Jack experiences strange apparitions at the lodge, some from the house's past, some from his own. As work progresses on the novel, the aging Victorian begins to regain her beauty. It becomes harder and harder for Jack to navigate between the world of his imagination and the reality of his solitude. Jack turns out a Pulitzer winning novel, but in the final climactic conflict Jack discovers that some ghosts are very real and hell just might be one's own creation.
