James B. Brandt is currently working on commissioned scripts for Radiant Century Productions (THE MILLER PREDICTION, scheduled to begin production in April) and Ignite Productions/TX (DARK LEGACY scheduled for late summer or early fall). He just signed on to co-produce THE MILLER PREDICTION.
His recently completed scripts include: A NIGHT OF LIGHTS (romantic comedy), BEYOND SUSPICION (Psychological Drama, option to Gibraltar Pacific expired), DEATH COMES WITH THE THUNDER (action, Semi Finalist in the ScreenCraft and Final Draft scriptwriting contests and Quarter Finalist in the Creative World Awards), CARROT (a romantic comedy, option with Gibraltar Pacific Productions is expired, now under development with another client), THERE ARE NO COWS IN HONG KONG (an action/comedy - option with Gibraltar Pacific expired), RIVER RUN (horror, option with Lapdog Entertainment and Off the Field now expired), SNAKE DANCE (horror, option with Lapdog Entertainment and Off the Field now expired), and WINNER TAKE ALL (action/horror, option with Reflection Studios LLC is expired), and THE BITTER FRUIT (revenge).
Also, since New Year's 2012, he has completed two novels: THE TOY MAKER and A SENSE OF DUTY. He is novelizing an earlier screenplay, THE MAN FROM THE SHADOWS. Gibraltar Pacific requested TV series versions of BEYOND SUSPICION and WINNER TAKES ALL. Those were developed and placed in circulation as THE UNKNOWN KILLER and THE GODDESS, both optioned by Lapdog Productions. Reception of these and other products has been good, Gibraltar Pacific reports: "James' work is being accepted at a very high level and is generating a great deal of interest among the upper levels of the different networks. So the more of James' that I can bring to them I am sure the more networks will be adding his shows to their line-up. The responses I have been receiving is that his work is excellent, in some cases it just doesn't fit in their current line-up but they want to see more."
His first novel, OUTPOST SEVEN, was published in 2001. However, his professional writing career goes back much farther. He began with short stories and essays but had his first job as a copywriter for an ad agency. DREAMS AND OTHER THINGS, a stage play, was produced by Ohio State University's Dramatics, Inc. and selected to be taped and rebroadcast by the school's telecommunications service during his sophomore college year.
He was hired by Film Ventures International to pen a film that had already been cast, was in development, and was suddenly without a viable script. That became WHATEVER IT TAKES. He also completed ANCIENT MY ENEMY, based on Gordon R Dickson's novella for Kacharo and Grad Productions, R.A.T...S [RETIRED ACTORS OF TEXAS... SANATORIUM] (Comedy) for Texas and Arizona Productions - option expired - and THE MISSING KEYS, from William Dear's novel, all on assignment. He sold options on seven other screen plays to three different production companies. DR WHO IN AMERICA, a documentary he co-wrote and co-produced, was bought for worldwide rights by the BBC after a year's run on PBS regional networks.
James subsequently worked on development of WARRIORS OF VIRTUE (MGM) which let do him connecting with Lang Elliot, former CEO of Tri-Star Pictures, and Hugh Kelley, who expressed an interest in his sci-fi/buddy film MINOR CRIMES. Elliot and Kelley were responsible for the successful production of CAGED and CAGED II. Steven de Sousa hired him as a staff writer on CADILLACS AND DINOSAURS, though the series was cancelled after the first episode was broadcast.
Additional writing credits include seven years as Technical Editor for Government Video Magazine, two years as Managing Editor and Editor-n-Chief for Sight and Sound Magazine and one year as Editor-n-Chief of Texas Film and Video News. He teaches part time for a community college in their video production program.
