A mysterious melting of an Antarctic Lake that was frozen two miles deep. A team of scientists, a Navy Lt. and a veteran sea captain investigate- only to find out that the ice has trapped a race of beings that ruled the earth 10,000 years ago and who want to reclaim what was once theirs.
A ship off the coast of Australia is attacked and all communication is lost but not before they find something weird. A heat source coming from 2 miles under an iced over lake.
Prof. Danvers uses this information at the bottom of an age-old Antarctic Lake and convinces the CIA to investigate. The initial thought is that it is because of climate change.
Danvers is sent with along with a tough no-nonsense female Navy Lieutenant Hartley. The only Captain with an ice breaker in that area of the world is the grizzled ex -Navy Seal Captain Jenkins who takes the job strictly for the money because his boat is in hock.
Once they arrive, they find a ship that called for distress abandoned with all souls on board disappeared. This leads them to a drilling camp on the ice where a hole 2 miles down is found and the creatures that were trapped are set free. After a fierce fire fight, Danvers, Hartley and Jenkins manage to get back to Jenkin's ship only to find the Beings already there holding the crew hostage. Prof. Danvers then talks to the Beings in their own language, and it turns out Danvers has been working to free them all along, for the power he will get when they talk over the planet. It turns out he planned the whole expedition to free his Masters.
Meanwhile, a submarine sent to help investigate a distress call slams up through the ice and the Beings quickly take it over. Jenkins and Hartley now have to stop the Being Leader from using one of the nuclear devices on the submarine to melt the ice in one flash releasing all the untold Beings under the ice at one time and finally take back the world they once ruled.
Jenkins and Hartley fight their way on to the submarine and after a vicious fight with the Beings and The Being leader, they finally manage to best the Being Leader and shoot the Leader and the nuclear device out the torpedo tube far enough away and underwater that the explosion causes little effect except a swell of ocean the rises the submarine out of the water.
The world is saved and Hartley and Jenkins sail back home in each other's arms.
