GUARDIAN ANGEL
By Thomas Elizondo

GENRE: Other
LOGLINE:

After his premature death on Earth, a broken father has the chance to redeem his soul by becoming a guardian angel to those left behind.

SYNOPSIS:

JAMES is an unhoused alcoholic whose life has spiraled in the wake of his beloved wife SUSAN's

death, causing him to abandon their son ISAAC as he succumbs to his grief. His life ends when he

wanders into the path of an oncoming bus.

James awakens in Purgatory, an unexpectedly corporate environment, where he meets angels

STANLEY and MARGARET. They explain that James has a chance to redeem his soul by becoming a

Guardian Angel, which James agrees to without reading the fine print. On his first assignment,

James is horrified when he is sent to witness the brutal death of a mother and her child in a

flaming car wreck. Unsure how to help, James' shock is compounded when Susan appears - having

become an avatar of death since her passing - and forces, James, to take on the agony of the child's

death while she collects the boy's soul.

Returning to Purgatory, James is given a clearer view of his new life. Guardian Angels have

"familiars," people who they interacted with - sometimes only briefly - over the course of their life

on Earth. The circumstances of a person's death can damage the psyche of their soul, prolonging

the time they need to recover before being reborn and risking their eternal damnation if their soul

becomes too tattered for redemption. Guardian Angels protect the psyche of these souls, and their

actions have a determining factor on whether God will choose to birth the world anew after

Judgment Day - which may be fast approaching, if LUCIFER, who has been quietly pulling strings

behind the scenes of Purgatory and the day-to-day brutalities of life on Earth, has anything to say

about it.

James and Susan's son Isaac, now a deeply troubled man in his early 20s who is prone to fits of

rage and heavy drug abuse, runs afoul of a mysterious gang leader named IGNACIO, who has been

involved in several recent deaths of Guardian Angel familiars. When Ignacio's gang attempt to

murder Isaac by staging an overdose, an enraged James reaches out beyond his incorporeal form

and protects his son, resulting in the untimely death of the gang members and throwing the order

of life and death into chaos. Though this puts James at odds with his fellow Guardian Angels, some

of them warm to his cause when they uncover evidence of Ignacio posing an outsize threat to the

humans of Earth. Susan herself tries to intervene but is waylaid by Lucifer, who - after a fierce

battle - imprisons Susan in a lake of fire in hell.

As both human and angelic forces close in on Ignacio, the full extent of the man's horrifying

schemes are revealed: Ignacio, who has come as an earthly vessel for Lucifer, has been leading a

child sacrificing cult to bring about the apocalypse. Susan is rescued from Hell, but her torment

has damaged her soul too badly to serve as an avatar of death any longer. In a moment of grace

and forgiveness, Susan's soul merges with James, granting him the power necessary to battle

Ignacio on Earth alongside his son. The Guardian Angels are able to rend Lucifer's essence from

Ignacio, allowing Isaac and his allies to defeat the vessel, but not before the apocalypse arrives to

wipe out all life on Earth. Margaret, Stanley, James, and the Guardian Angels do what they can to

protect the souls that have fallen under Ignacio's influence before the end: The souls who have

remained strong enough to endure will be reborn should God decide to birth the world anew, while

those who are destined for damnation will merely cease to exist.

James reawakens in a world made new, reuniting with Susan and Isaac - now reborn as an infant,

giving James a second chance to be the father his son deserved. As they rejoice in their new life,

Lucifer, a serpent once again, watches on in disgust.
