As a second option, use the initial meeting between Sean and Will in Good Will Hunting or Annie's wedding shower meltdown from The Bridesmaids, and write a scene where your character snaps!

What You'll Learn

There are two challenges to choose from this month! 1) Write a scene where the characters use one word that takes on new meaning or 2) Write an epic meltdown for your character.

The Write Now Challenge: 4 Moments. 1 Story. 1 Page

In this challenge, members were asked to tell an entire story, in one page of script, using precisely four scenes. Far too many screenwriters waste pages. Good screenwriting is about making every single sentence count. There shouldn’t be any moment of a movie or television series which isn’t important on some level. The  scenes can have dialogue - or no dialogue - depending on what you choose. What is important is that it has a beginning, middle, and an end. When you are done watching the webcast, head on over to the Private Lounge and discuss your favorite submissions!

The Write Now Challenge: Antagonists Anonymous

In this challenge, members were asked to pick their favorite antagonist or villain from film, television or literature and in - ONLY ONE PAGE - write a monologue from his or her point of view. The participants could frame this as an interrogation, a negotiation, a confession, or a conspiratorial conversation. Most importantly, writers has to make sure the scene had conflict, and the character's point of view in his or her voice.   During the webcast we heard from some of our favorite protagonists, including Loki from the Marvel Universe, Terence Fletcher of Whiplash, Commodus from Gladiator, Jack Bynes of Meet the Parents, and Lex Luther of Superman among many others.

The Write Now Challenge: First Impressions

We're back in the Writers' Room this afternoon for the Write Now Challenge Webcast: First Impressions.  For this challenge, using the Breakdown Webcast: Character Introductions as your guide, rewrite at least 3 character introductions using the principles learned during the webcast.

Breaking Through Screenwriting Challenges, Obstacles and Setbacks

If you're ready to break through some of your most challenging writing issues, this is the webcast for you.

Write Now Webcast - Describe Tools, Mechanisms, Machinerly or Complex Ideas

While the scene will be heavy with exposition, disguise the exposition in dialogue and conflict as much as possible. How does the character make the complex simple? What props does the person use? How does the character who receives the info react?

The Write Now Webcast: Plot Twists!

Welcome to the final Writers' Room webcast of 2019! The last broadcast of the year was the Write Now Challenge: Plot Twists! This month you were challenged to write a scene in 3-5 pages that tells a story with a major plot twist. This is no easy feat and perhaps the most difficult challenge we have faced to date! There is also a special question and answer session during the broadcast, where members asked me anything about the industry, the craft, the business, your screenwriting career or any other burning questions you may have!
