Cinematographer, director of photography and filmmaker in Los Angeles, California

About Alexander

Alexander became a filmmaker because of a tyrannosaurus rex. Not just any t-rex, but the t-rex from the 1993 classic Jurassic Park which both terrified him and, a week later, after watching a behind the scenes documentary detailing how the filmmakers had created that terror, fascinated him. It was the first film he had ever seen in a theater and it lead to a lifelong addiction.

Twenty years later, Alex graduated from CSU Northridge with a degree in Film Production and Cinematography. Since, he has shot numerous short films, music videos, interviews and live events.

As a cinematographer, Alex prides himself on his ability to problem solve in every sense of the term. Whether it’s lighting a challenging space, working within a limited budget, or dealing with technical glitches, he consistently pushes what’s achievable and refuses to compromise quality. He is obsessed with finding the right tools for any job, even when that means building his own HMI or LED lights, and constantly works to streamline and simplify the process which is why he put together his own camera, grip and lighting kit that can quickly pack into his car and shoot any small production at a moment’s notice.

As much as Alex obsesses over equipment, however, his approach to cinematography is that what’s in front of the camera and lens is far more important than having the most expensive cameras and lenses. He sees each project as a creative partnership and strives not just to capture the most beautiful images he can manage, but tell the story the director wants to tell in the best way possible. Alex doesn’t like to stick to one style, but rather he creates a look specific to each film. He treats the cinematography as a character itself, acting and reacting to the flow of the narrative.

Alex strives to tell good stories that matter and stand the test of time. He hopes to create images that can move and influence people in a positive way. On the way there, he would like to become an ASC member. He also wouldn’t mind being part of a film that terrifies another kid into pursuing a lifelong addiction to filmmaking.
