Learn directly from Daniel Stellan Kendrick, Manager and Development Executive at Chatrone LLC (The Book of Life). From our first exposures to Mickey Mouse to the off-color adult humor of South Park, animation spans the human experience. One of the most unlimited and flexible mediums of entertainment, it often remains an outlier in the film industry. Aspiring writers are constantly inundated with information and resources about writing the perfect feature screenplay, but rarely do they have the opportunity to glimpse inside the animation industry. This practical and informative webinar will illuminate the trade secrets and industry culture of cartoons. Over the years, Daniel Stellan Kendrick has heard countless pitches from aspiring animation writers. After a while, he realized that the tools required to succeed at writing this unique and unfamiliar specialty are not easy to find. In this Stage 32 Next Level Webinar, Daniel will walk you through the lay of the land of the animation industry. From concept creation, to the big players, to the final pitch, Daniel will help you master this boundlessly imaginative field we call “animation.” Daniel Stellan Kendrick is a manager and development executive at Chatrone LLC, a production / management company, which specializes in animation. His clients include writers, artists, and creators that have worked on projects such as Robot Chicken, Spongebob Squarepants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and The Lego Movie. Chatrone’s first animated feature, The Book Of Life, was nominated for five Annie Awards and a Golden Globe.
You want to be a studio writer. You have a high concept screenplay. Perhaps you control some blockbuster intellectual property (IP). Or maybe you have the next big trilogy or breakthrough character idea. There are hundreds of studio films that are released each year in need of talented writers. But writing high concept screenplays requires a particular set of skills and understanding. Landing a studio job as a writer is NOT an impossibility. In fact, more and more studios are turning to writers (and directors) of smaller films to help develop and write bigger budget features. But, as you might imagine, this is a competitive arena. Learning how to write a studio style screenplay is only part of the game. You need to understand how to get from completed screenplay to into the room. And then you have to understand how to work the room. The simplest way to get all this done? You need a team. Securing a manager, perhaps an agent, and, most importantly, a qualified, killer entertainment attorney on your side can make all the difference. Sounds like a long haul? It's not. It all begins by looking at yourself as an entrepreneur. Michael Colleary has been working within the studio system for over 3 decades. He was the lead writer on Face/Off and the story creator and editor on Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. And those are a couple of the movies that got made! Michael has made a career and a very lucrative living writing studio films that were purchased and never made. Even though you know some of Michael’s films, he’s made an entire career off of writing things that maybe you’ve never seen get made. Studios pay big money for screenplays, even those that don't make it to the screen. Michael will take you through everything you need to know about breaking into the studios and sustaining a career. You will learn to think like an entrepreneur and develop the skills you need to get work writing specs, rewrites, pitches and script doctoring. These are the skills that will make you an in demand writer. But that's not enough! Michael will also teach you the business side of working within the studio system. You'll understand how to build your support team and how to negotiate. This often overlooked part of the process is what will separate you from the pack and help you get in and stay in the system. PRAISE FOR MICHAEL'S TEACHINGS: “Anyone, and I mean anyone interested in becoming a screenwriter – or becoming a BETTER screenwriter has come to the right place. Michael is the best story analyst in Hollywood. Smart, insightful, thorough and creative – he will work his rear-end off on your script or story idea until it sings with commercial and artistic viability. I know this from first hand experience, having collaborated with him on numerous television and feature film projects, beginning with ‘Face/Off.’ Additionally, he has served as my personal mentor and sounding board on practically every sale I’ve ever had in my entire career. You will not be disappointed!” - Mike Werb; screenwriter “The Mask,” “Face-Off,” “Tomb Raider,” “Unnatural History” and more.
Learn how you can take your script from good to great by properly incorporating theme throughout your story from Jonny Grant, the screenwriter of THE DARE & ARTHUR & MERLIN: KNIGHTS OF CAMELOT. PLUS! You'll receive exclusive handouts to help you with theme in your script, including Structure & Theme Guidelines and Setting, Dialogue & Thematic Patterning Guidelines While many of your most beloved films feature flashy titles or concepts - dinosaurs escaping from an amusement park, an unsinkable ship hitting an iceberg and sinking into the ocean, a giant shark terrorizing beachgoers - there is always so much more to these stories than what appears at first glance. Beneath the facade, JURASSIC PARK is about a man learning to become a parent, TITANIC is a love story about two people coming together for a happier life, and JAWS is about people facing their phobias. These are all examples of THEME in film and help give those films layers of meaning that bring audiences back for multiple viewings. There’s countless examples of themes beneath the surface of your favorite movies. However, incorporating theme into your writing is tricky; it is often submerged in the words and actions of the characters and subtly built into the plot. How can you effectively weave your theme into your story? How do you subtly get the theme across without hitting the audience over the head with it? Conversely, how can you make sure your theme comes across without being too convoluted? And how can your theme tie into the surface level plot of your story? In this exclusive Stage 32 on-demand webinar, you’ll learn how to effectively incorporate theme into your script to elevate your story and engage your audience. Teaching you everything you need to know about creating a strong theme in your screenplay is accomplished screenwriter Jonny Grant. Represented by top management company, Zero Gravity Management, Jonny’s recent work includes THE DARE for Millennium Films and Lionsgate directed by Giles Alderson and starring Richard Brake (The Mandolorian, Game of Thrones) & Bart Edwards (PeepShow, The Witcher) and ARTHUR & MERLIN, KNIGHTS OF CAMELOT starring Richard Short (Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan). Incorporating theme into your screenplay is a universal strength and powerful tool to make your scripts engaging on multiple levels! Jonny is a master of incorporating theme into his work and is exclusively sharing his expertise with the Stage 32 community. PLUS! You’ll receive exclusive handouts to help you add theme into your screenplay. Downloads include: Structure & Theme Guidelines Setting, Dialogue & Thematic Patterning Guidelines If you're looking to elevate your screenwriting, this webinar is a must!
