Acting : Dictionary of Terms! by Matthew Cornwell

Dictionary of Terms!

Hello all, a friend of mine shared this super-comprehensive dictionary of terms used in the business. Some are useful during the script analysis phase (like CHYRON), some for the on set experience (PICTURE'S UP), and there are even the acronyms you might find on a call sheet (no actor wants to be just a SWF). Enjoy!

Karen "Kay" Ross

Ooo, this is a FANTASTIC resource! Actually, would you be willing to share this in the Filmmaking Lounge as well, since there is on-set lingo that applies to other roles? Thank you for sharing such valuable information!

Karen "Kay" Ross

Does anyone else have the ditty from Danny Kaye's "The Court Jester" playing in their heads? "The terms, the terms..." LOL

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks, Matthew. I might not use these terms, but it's nice to have a resource to go to in case I need it.

This is such a useful resource!

I wonder if the lingo is the same in Europe..

Eyiara, I know different countries have different lingo. For instance, in the US the collection of trucks that house Hair, Makeup, Costumes, and trailers for cast is called "Base Camp". It's the "Circus" in Canada. I tried to find a "set lingo translator" from the US to Europe, but couldn't find one easily. I'm sure there's some resource out there.

Maurice Vaughan

I like that name, Matthew Cornwell ("Circus").
