I am not sure if this topic has been discussed, but I do not have the patience to go searching throughout the forum. I would like to know from actors only: What type of environment/city/location is good for an actor? I have been dividing my time from Berlin, Germany to Warsaw, Poland; and from my experience I have found that neither of these locations have really worked in my favor. Berlin is an amazing city, filled with art and culture, however it has been so difficult for me to find work in acting there. I have gotten some work in Warsaw, mainly commercials, but I do not feel comfortable in Warsaw, the place depresses me. I am contemplating moving to Paris, or London, or even Los Angeles. But I would like to know from fellow actors what environment/city/location is right for actors? Is it a place where an actor can get steady work, i.e. a huge market for actors, or a place where actors feel comfortable, even though the market for actors is not a big? Thanks in advance for all "constructive/helpful" comments. Talya
Hi Talya - hopefully you'll get a good response to your post, but just an FYI in the future if you click on LOUNGE on your top menu bar, the first page will bring up a search bar, and you can type in any topics you are searching for. You should network with Armen Grayg - he will probably have some good advice for you - he's traveled all over acting: https://www.stage32.com/blog/Only-You-Can-Make-it-Happen. Also, there are dozens of blogs about this in the BLOG section, and you can also search for some advice under EDUCATION > ON STAGE WITH RB. Good luck!

Hi Tayla. So hard to answer. SO subjective. So much to do with personal tastes and such. There's the great southern migration right now from LA to Atlanta with people chasing opportunities. Theres people big on Canada. A while back it was people heading to New Mexico, and New Orleans chasing productions. Some people stay in Europe/Russia because of their accents. More work for them they feel. Some Bollywood actors obviously feel more opportunities there for them. Its just so subjective. I think it has to be something you feel and go with for yourself. LA is the biggest market in the world. But doesn't necessarily represent the most opportunity. That is something for each to determine based on a number of different variables I feel. That's my 2 cents Tayla.

Hi Talya, I can only speak from my experience pursuing it here in LA. I've found some success here as I'm sure a lot of people will also say. But a factor I want to bring your attention to, one of the main ones that motivated me to move here, was that I needed to be surrounded by like-minded people. It's so important to be surrounded by fellow actors and artists that relate and understand what you're going through and be supportive of your pursuit of the craft. And like I had anticipated, I found that dynamic with some good people I've met out here. A lot of the friends I have here, I've met in acting class, working on set, etc... What we do is so hard, the business of it, the pursuit of it is so difficult, the only way we can survive and thrive in it is with friends that get it. So go where ever you are able to build this kind of relationship with people, and from my personal experience here in LA, it's locations where the market is big. Hope this helps.

Thank you Chris and Zedrick, my main concern is being surrounded by like minded people. I know that I am in the wrong environment. And the people that I surrounded by do not resonate with me. I talk to people and they think acting is just a hobby. And some of my "so-called" friends are dream killers. So that is why I come here to this community because at least I can "talk" to people who are supportive and understand what it means to be an actor/artist.

We actors torture ourselves thinking success exists somewhere "out there." So I try to redefine what success means. And it's not so much where you are but the story you are telling yourself when you are there. If you move to London and have a wildly successful time, somebody else could have the same exact experience and call it a failure. I am from New York and I've worked all around for 5 years, I think it has everything to offer in terms of friendly and safe working environments and opportunities at all rungs of the ladder. A safe and friendly acting environment is one that allows and encourages failure, knowing failure is a subjective decision and not the ultimate reality, because it's impossible to fail at being you, and that's what acting aims to express. Acting is not just like any other "job" in the world, its reward cannot be found "out there" first.
