Animation : Geri's Game by Terrence Sellers

Terrence Sellers

Geri's Game

I rewatched Geri's Game from Pixar for the first time in years. It's the short that originally aired in theater before A Bug's Life back in 1997. While the animation is very clearly dated, it still looks good enough to enjoy. But what really stood out to me was the quality of the storytelling. Though it has no dialog, the story translates just as well today as it did nearly 30 years ago. The best animation in the world can't trump a well written script. If you haven't seen Geri's Game, it's on Disney + plus but you can also find it on YouTube.

I don't see the need for animation to "trump" a well written script, it should all work together. A wonderful script can be ruined by bad animation and a lot of great animated stories are done with boards and not scripts. It's magic when both are at the top of their games.

I think this is why so many fell in love with Pixar - they really understood storytelling. I think at that time, general audiences had forgotten about the magic of short-form storytelling, though, and part of the richness of it is being able to do so with minimum dialogue and maximum visual action/consequence. I still use Pixar's "Presto" as a teaching tool to this day. Just brilliant. Thanks for sharing!

My youngest is Autistic and Gerri's Game and Presto would have him in stitches. I actually spent a pretty penny back in the day buying Pixar Shorts on Itunes so he had things he could watch on my laptop whenever we went on long trips or visited relatives.

I love how "Geri’s Game" captures the beauty of storytelling through animation. The way it balances humor and heart is what really makes it stand out. By the way, if you’re someone who likes to switch things up with interactive games on your phone, I’ve been using 1x-bet for a while. It’s got this mobile app that lets you enjoy a ton of games https://1xsinga.com/en/mobile so you can play whenever you want to take a break from animation discussions or just unwind. It’s not the typical gaming app, but it’s fun and engaging—something I didn’t expect to enjoy so much!
