Sure, it's an old book, but this covered the start of Tarantino's career. It's pretty interesting to see that he didn't have to back down on artistic creativity to get his first film made.
Okay, I meant his first completed film, Resevoir Dogs. When the book I was referring to was written, the Birthday movie was supposedly lost (and not shown to the financiers of other films.)
DOGS was originally going to be shot on my friend's 16mm camera for close to no money (what he got from the sale of TRUE ROMANCE - which he split with original Roger Avary). Then it got slipped to Harvey Keitel who signed on, which got him a direct to video deal with video company Live Ent for $1.2m. Before the VHS release, they played it on just over a dozen screens for a couple of weeks as publicity. I was one of the handful of people who saw it on the big screen in Los Angeles. Everyone else saw it on VHS, since it was a direct to video movie. His first paid gig as a screenwriter was on the direct to video erotic thriller PAST MIDNIGHT.
