What's up DP crew? Who is shooting what this week? Better yet... who is shooting the best story? As a DP, I'm obsessed with story. It's at the very foundation of what we do.
I recently started teaching an intro to production class a couple of nights a week at the local junior college. I decided that for the first several weeks, we wouldn't even touch a camera (blasphemy, I know). Instead, we would focus on the elements of a great filmed story. Want vs. Need. Age-old conflicts. Showing, not telling. In the first class, we talked about clips from films like Goodfellas, Glengarry, Glen Ross, and La Femme Nikita. We broke apart each clip and discussed shot selection, location, lighting, and most importantly, how the story motivated all of those afore-mentioned items.
I'd love to hear about the types of stories you're working on.
Onward!

My crew and I are currently in pre-production for an upcoming short called The Shape of Kindness. It's a fairy tale-esque meets legend thriller that we intend to film in the Oct/Nov time frame. We're making this a period piece that bleeds into modern day through a tight story and artistic, painterly imagery. :-)

The Face of Kindness sounds multilayered, almost like a riddle. And the very image — a fairy tale and a legend flowing into modern times — feels incredibly close to my heart. Film it with soul and make it ‘delicious,’ so that people will want to rewatch it and feel joy.
