Composing : What’s your go-to instrument? by Kat Spencer

Kat Spencer

What’s your go-to instrument?

For me, it’s the piano. Always has been. What’s the one instrument you turn to when words won’t do?

Allen Lynch

For me, it's the drums. Drums will lead me (back) to the piano.

Envious Allen Lynch - I have skill for 2 or 3 things on drums, but the fourth addition (left foot) was too much for my brain. My son, on the other hand, is a natural!

Allen Lynch

I'm sure your son got his musicality from you! Thankful for musical moms like you. My mother forced me to study piano before I could take up a 'fun instrument' like drums. Try adding your left foot (hi-hat) on the down beat only at first, see if that helps:)

Allen Lynch The next time I feel like making my head explode, I will try that :) My son is willing to give me lessons. hahahaha. Brave boy. Yes, both of my children followed in my musical footsteps. It's pretty awesome. They both play piano, Kira plays flute (like I did), and Grady drums (briefly flute...very briefly). They both compose, produce, and Kira is attending Berklee, learning music production. Grady is interested in film. So, I'm pretty sure one day we will create a movie. And score it.

Allen Lynch

Exploding (drum) heads is my specialty :) Talented family. Kudos to you, Kat!

Marc Soucy

I use two: a piano that has especially good electric piano and electric grand sounds, and a synthesizer with the ability to layer multiple sounds. Both motivate me in very different ways, and leave open tons of possibilities.

Kat Spencer

Allen Lynch Hahahahahaha. And thank you!
