A Request Is Not A Read.

A request is not a read.

It took me a while to understand the difference, and longer to stop confusing one for the other.

When someone asks for your script, it feels like a door opening. A producer, a manager, a name you recognize, saying "send it over." In that moment, it lands like progress.

It isn’t. Not yet.

A request costs nothing. It’s enthusiasm in the time it takes to type a sentence. The read is the thing that actually costs something, because time is the one resource nobody in this industry has going spare.

So the script goes on the pile. And the pile is where you live now, in the silence, with no way of knowing which version of the silence you’re in:

• Haven’t got to it yet.

• Read it and passed without a word.

• Never going to open it at all.

They all look identical from where you’re sitting, and it's easy to fill that silence with the worst theory you’ve got about yourself.

Here’s what I’ve found though, when my scripts actually get read, they tend to convert.

Full Dead Ahead went to a producer and ended up on their investment slate with no notes. Another went to one of the most important casting directors in the country, who is now attached and actively helping, again with barely a note.

The evidence I have says the writing works.

Full Dead Ahead in particular keeps getting requested off nothing more than the logline and the pitch document. The concept is doing exactly what it’s meant to do: make people want the script.

What stalls is the next step. The read. The bit that costs an evening instead of a sentence.

So the bottleneck isn’t the work, and it isn’t the idea. It’s the effort of opening the file.

I understand why that’s hard. Everyone’s to-do stack is enormous and everyone’s time is gone before the day starts.

But it got me thinking. People love to argue about what’s actually hard in filmmaking. Writing? Financing? Production? Distribution? Marketing?

Maybe the single hardest thing in filmmaking, the thing every other hard thing depends on, is getting the right person to open the file and read it.

Everything else is downstream of that.

Schuman Hoque I think this is a very important distinction.

A request feels like progress because it's evidence that the concept, logline, or pitch has done its job. Someone was interested enough to ask for the script. But you're right—the real investment begins when someone actually sets aside time to read it.

What I found particularly interesting in your post is the idea that the bottleneck isn't always the quality of the writing. Sometimes it's simply attention. In an industry where everyone is overwhelmed with material, getting the script opened can be a challenge in itself.

I also think your examples are encouraging because they highlight something many writers forget: a positive response from people who actually read the work is often more meaningful than the silence from those who never got around to it.

"Easier written than read" is a great line because it captures a reality most writers experience sooner or later.

Schuman Hoque The whole "coverage" pathology in studios is just so that no one has to actually read your script and take any responsibility for choosing something. After decades in the industry, the only people I have come to expect to actually read a script is: the talent, the director, my partner. Notice that Investor, Producer, Distributor, DP or anyone else you might think would read it as part of the process of creating a film... can absolutely not be expected to read it unless you shove their nose onto the page... even while investing the sums required to do so.

Every other step in this business has a deadline and someone accountable for it, and the read has neither, very generally speaking, so it loses every collision with the things that do. The scripts that jump the pile are usually the ones where someone already has a stake, a referrer nudging or a relationship applying quiet pressure, because that's what turns "I should read this" into "I have to." So maybe the hardest thing isn't getting someone to open the file, it's finding the one person whose stake puts the read on a deadline.
