Filmmaking / Directing : Finding a director. by Steven M. Cross

Finding a director.

I have a script in which a lesbian teacher tries to help an artistic girl with DID, but one of the girl’s alts can destroy her. In another lounge someone posted that instead of trying to find an actor or actress to take on the script, I should find a director who believes in the project. Any ideas on how to find and contact directors would be greatly appreciated.

This is a good first step. It sounds not quite in my area of interest, but others here might be interested. You could post in the "jobs" section as well, just make it clear it's in development and you're looking to attach someone capable.

Karen "Kay" Ross

You should definitely post your script here and on Script Revolution - I know more than a few directors that look for their next project there. Also, if your script places in contests, that could be a good way to attract directors. Finally, consider putting together a mood board - a series of stills for a slideshow that shows the kind of director you're looking for.. Let us know how it goes!

Steven M. Cross

Thank you, Karen. As soon as I feel like I can, I'll post it. It isn't quite there yet. I have never heard of a Mood board. Is there anywhere I can see a sample of one.

Karen "Kay" Ross

This is a good article from Canva (https://www.canva.com/learn/make-a-mood-board/). It'll feel like a pitch but with less words. I've often used stills from comparable films (so whatever comps you're thinking of using in your pitch, consider grabbing stills from those). Directors will use it in pre-production, but it could help you to attract directors who see your intentions.

I saw this on twitter https://filmfreeway.com/FringeQueerFilmArtsFest

Do check it out, might find some directors there.

I have personal experience with someone with DID so I know exactly how that is and works

Kacee Potential

Steven M. Cross Hi - can you expand more in the script - short, feature, theater, tv series, etc. What would the logline be? I have experience with working with people who have DID as well as working with your characters stated above. In addition, finding an actor who would be interested is also a viable option but in order to do this, you would need to do lots and lots of research. :)

Steven M. Cross

Kacee, I have done a lot of research on the condition but not on finding the connections to possibly get it produced. It is a feature. I accidentally found out that one of my former students has DID, and I've talked to her some including the strong ALT Oliver who kind of takes over when things get tense. I myself am bipolar so I know a little about mental illness from my own experience. By making the main character a teacher, I am also in familiar territory since I taught for over 30 years. I guess my logline would be something like this, A closeted, art teacher mentors a talented DID student, but one of the girl's alts might ruin her life if she doesn't deal with the issue. That's a rough logline, but it hits most of the story.

Kacee Potential

Steven M. Cross I suggest write out what DID is as people not in the field might not know as well as writing out ALTs as this word has different meanings in different sectors of life. Do not use acronyms or phrases in your pitch or logline.

Most of us think of it as multiple personality disorder, but that is out of date.

Eric Roberts

Yeah thanks Kacee, I had to look it up. I also have my first screenplay going around, and the heroine is a below-the-elbow amputee. This discussion is very helpful. I think the trend is moving towards using actors with the actual disability in that role. Great trend, but seems like finding talent could be challenging.

Kacee Potential

Eric Roberts, I would suggest reaching out to Gail Williamson at Kazarian, Measures, and Ruskin or for short KMR as lots of production companies contact her as she reps talent with disabilities. Here is the link https://kmrtalent.com/diversity/ In addition I am sure if you post a casting notice on Breakdown Services you will get the actors you need. I have been casting actors with special needs for over a long way. They are out there but it may take a little longer in finding them. I have cast newcomers several times with the disability because I could not find an actor with the same. Best of Luck

Kacee Potential

Steven M. Cross I have not heard it called Multiple Personality in quite some time, as Dissociative Disorders have somewhat of a different degree to them than MPD
