Documentary filmmaking is basically a minefield of expensive mistakes waiting to happen. I've seen too many passionate filmmakers burn through their budgets, get sued, or end up with footage they can't legally use because they didn't know what they didn't know. Some jump straight into filming without proper releases and end up with a movie they can't distribute. Others think they can wing the budget and run out of money halfway through editing. And don't even get me started on filmmakers who finish their documentary only to discover they have no idea how to get it in front of audiences.
The truth is, the documentary world doesn't care how passionate you are about your subject - if you don't understand the business side, the legal requirements, and the distribution game, your film will likely end up gathering dust on a hard drive. Learning these fundamentals isn't just helpful, it's absolutely critical if you want to join the ranks of successful documentarians who actually get their films seen and make a living doing what they love.
