Hey Shadow Dragu-Mihai, great to see a long time member welcoming the new folks. With your background in horror and dark fantasy, what's one piece of advice you'd give to someone newer trying to break into those genres?

Shadow Dragu-Mihai

Oh, and I just have to say, I got to hear and meet 2025 Nobel Prize winner John Martinis yesterday, when my CEO at Aerith and I attended the Quantum Industry Showcase in Santa Barbara (Aerith is the leader in quantum imaging). That was amazing!

Hi Shadow Dragu-Mihai! It’s a pleasure to connect with a fellow Texan—I’m based in Cisco. As a Lounge Moderator here, I really enjoy seeing veterans like you share over 30 years of experience with the community. I especially connect with your work at Diamond Shadow, and I’m a strong believer that emotional depth is what truly makes or breaks a story, particularly in psychological thrillers and dark fantasy.

I’m currently bridging my work in acting with a focus on subtle, “invisible” VFX, using them to refine the frame and keep viewers fully immersed in the story. I’d love to stay connected and learn from your perspective on bringing these kinds of expressive projects to market.

Kenny Luongo

Appreciate you sharing this—especially the focus on psychological depth and internal reality. That’s exactly the space I’m building in, grounded in real experience with mental health, addiction, identity, and perception. The goal is to create work that resonates in a real way, but also cinematically. Looking forward to what you put out. Shadow Dragu-Mihai

Sam Rivera To answer your question, anyone wanting to break into the horror/psychological thriller/dark fantasy genres should get very familiar with what has been done in those genres. You need to know the tropes, the usual structures, and you should have some of your own ideas of why certain films were successful or unsuccessful. Be aware that in these genres, audience has specific expectations as to structure. You must use that to your advantage and if you are going to break that structure, which you might, you should know why and how to do it. You should attempt to find some new way or some unexplored aspect of plot, human behavior, etc., something original in other words, that you can do within the established structures.

Timothy Miller What do you mean by "invisible" VFX?

Timothy Miller

Shadow Dragu-Mihai

I'm happy that you ask, in video editing the subtle increase of contrast to brighten or dull the brightness of the scene, the small undetectable effects that provide more realistic visual of the scene.

Shadow Dragu-Mihai

I see. How would you define that as different from what the colorist does?

Timothy Miller

allow me to elaborate using a filming perspective. let's use the patriot movie as an example:

if you were unaware of the grand scale of the film there were many moments where film equipment " the boom mic" was in the scene.

the invisible VFX is used to remove that from the scene.

while colorist primary focus on enhancement of the mood and feel.

If you would rather have a total explanation I could go into more detail involving the pixel manipulation?

Timothy Miller I see. In post we usually call that "paint and paint back" or "digital cleanup", what threw me is that you talked about increase in contrast, which is usually about color correction.

Claudia Guerrero-Zalokar

Hi Shadow - nice to meet you and learn about your Stage 32 experience and professional accomplishments! I recently joined and come from a post-production/producing background. Happy to connect and converse further (including getting projects to market). Cheers

Timothy Miller

Shadow Dragu-Mihai thank you,

I am unfamiliar with the names used in post, I will familiarize myself to those terms so I don't lead myself into a similar situation in the future. so paint and paint back, color correction.

David Manirakiza

Hello Shadow, it’s a pleasure to connect with you.

I came across your post and was really interested in your work in psychological horror and dark fantasy. That aligns closely with the kind of stories I write.

I’m currently developing a psychological horror feature titled THE LAST OFFERING, focused on atmosphere, trauma, and supernatural elements.

I’d really value connecting with you and hearing your perspective on projects in this space.

Congrats!
