Progress Thanks To A Writing Strategy

Hi all, hope you're having a great weekend. Like many of you I have multiple writing projects on the go. In my case I have two screenplays in rewrite - one small budget and one much larger budget - and another new idea that I'm longing to develop. But in what order should I tackle them? The question baffled me and stopped me making progress for a couple of weeks. Then I realised...

1) The new one has to wait. Because it just does. It's so joyously perfect while it's in my head but once it comes out, it won't be. It'll need drafts and rewrites and then I'll have three on the go and... no.

2) The smaller budget one is more likely to get made first but neither of them are getting green-lit tomorrow. So which one is easier to take to the next stage? The more expensive one. (People also seem to like the logline.)

3) So do that first and use it as a calling card and to enter competitions. It's useful just as a finished script to raise my profile and begin to build a reputation. It may not get made for years, if ever, so be it.

4) The small budget rewrite comes after that. And the newbie comes last.

The great thing about this - regardless of whether it's the right answer - is that I now have a strategy to follow. I know what I'm meant to be doing for the next few months. And that's progress.

Well done, John Clive Carter! Prioritizing can be challenging. Congrats! I'm also a screenwriter and it's interesting to see how a project changes as it goes from my head (where the possibilities are limitless) to the page (where I have to start getting real). I wish you all the best with your process!

John Clive Carter Nice one, John. I like the fact that you've sat yourself down and got a little space to work it all out.

Glad you figured out a strategy, John Clive Carter. I'm in the same boat! Your strategy might help me figure out which script to write next. Thanks.
