Violence is not the answer, but it was for this film!

Hello Stage 32 Community, I thought I would share another INDEPTH Sound Design video. I remember last year, I had to work on a film that had some pretty violent parts, and the director wanted the stab/punch impacts have that impactful violent sound like in "Fight Club" I was able to pull it off pretty decently, and there was something I remembered from the past about punches, and it was the actual skin sound impact.

When I first tried designing sound for a fighting scene, I remember the director said he wanted to hear the bone and skin contact sound, and this made a huge difference to what I was missing. In this video commentary by the legendary sound designer Ren Klyce, they used several ideas to capture those violent punches, and using chicken stuffed with walnuts, but what was also important was location. They used an empty basement at Skywalker Ranch. This made sense because the fights were in the basement, so they wanted to capture the essence, and acoustics of that room.

Oooo - location as part of sound design?!? Genius!

Thanks for all of these sound design videos, Kevin Gamble ! they are nice way to get the creativity going again. I did something similar in our last film. It was shot in a small warehouse, so it had some reflections. We needed sounds of boxed falling and things getting hit, so I ended up recording in my garage which added a little bit of that warehouse sound.

Sam Chambliss My pleasure! That's awesome Sam, it's probably best to always capture as much of the actual space as possible.

Oh for sure, it just happened to go that way because the place we filmed at was under construction so we had limited time as it was being worked on. But I'm all for getting as much as we can on location.
