I'm interested in becoming a production assistant, as a means of gaining experiencing and developing connections within the film industry. I've helped out with student productions and broadcast journalism pieces in the past, but have no professional projects on my resume. What are some tips for prospective P.A.'s?

Volunteer on every Indie project you can handle. Talk with others in search of mentors to raise your skill sets and business acumen. Talk with production companies about being an intern. PA is a start, but learn many other skill sets if you want to see paid work.
Thanks for the advice John. Are production assistants paid on some sets or are most internship situations?
Hey Tony we actually have a class coming up on this. Keep your eyes out for it under Education!
Thanks for the heads up Shannon. That's becoming a motif of my forum posts.

Get on Mandy.com and look for some PA jobs. do the freebies at first but when you learn some grip and some AD stuff start looking towards paid gigs. also one piece of advice is when on a set where there's a lot of job responsibilities changing hands do any job you can to learn what you finally want to do and chase after it
Good idea. Do you recommend taking film classes or learning on the job?
on the job. I'd never recommend film school. if you have the money for film school just make a short film. you will learn a massive amount from all your mistakes.

Hey. Check out http://pabootcamp.com - my friends run it. Tell them I sent you. They run them all over the country now, so wherever you are, they probably have on near you. Good luck! I started as a P.A. Now developing my next feature with an Oscar winner and a BAFTA winner.
