NYC or online writing classes?

Hey Screenwriters! I'm an Animation Supervisor and would like to fill my head with more storytelling info. Do you have any online or NYC courses you would recommend in the areas of: screenplays, script writing, character dev, plot etc. Would love to hear your rec's.

Jackie Tarascio Hi Jackie! Glad you're here. I write animated scripts as well so I'm excited for you and your journey. For classes, I would consider reaching out to Sam or Sydney at Edu@stage32.com. I'd also love to know more about what you do!

Welcome aboard Jackie!

I don't have any suggestions as far as online courses go, but I do have a few books and websites as recommendations for you. They have helped me learn more about screenwriting and the business side of things. Here goes nothing:

- Screenwriting from the Soul by Richard J. Krevolin (1998)

- Writing Treatments That Sell. How to Create and Market Your Story Ideas to the Motion Pictures and TV Industry by Kenneth Atchity and Chi-li Wong (2nd edition, 2003)

- Creating Unforgettable Characters by Linda Seger (1990)

- The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure For Writers by Christopher Vogler (2007)

- The Complete Book of Screenwriting by J. Michael Straczynski (1996)

- Screencraft: https://screencraft.org/

- Industrial Scripts: https://industrialscripts.com/

- Script Magazine: https://scriptmag.com/

I'm actually taking a writing lab through Stage 32 right now (my second). I love the labs because you get personalized feedback and the recordings so you can go back and watch them again. And the classes on here are great too (highly recommend anything that's taught by Brian Herskowitz, and there are some writing for animation courses with one of the writers of TOY STORY that are excellent) https://www.stage32.com/classes/tag/screenwriting?affid=ejlounge

Happy to recommend some more specific ones if you want to shoot me and email at success@stage32.com :)

Hey, Jackie! Long time, no see, my friend! I hope you've been well!

I second Emily's suggestion. If you want some good palette cleansers in the form of Free Stage 32 Webinars, may I suggest a few from the Netflix + Stage 32 series:

TV Pilot Structure w/ Anna Henry: https://www.stage32.com/webinars/Netflix-%20-Stage-32-Present-Television...

How to Write a TV Series to a Budget: https://www.stage32.com/webinars/Netflix-%20-Stage-32-Present-How-To-Wri...

How to Write Drama for Streaming Series: https://www.stage32.com/webinars/Netflix-%20-Stage-32-Present-How-to-Wri...

How to Write SciFi for Streaming Series: https://www.stage32.com/webinars/Netflix-%20-Stage-32-Present-Sci-Fi-wit...

And one of my favorites - How to Write Comedy for Streaming Series: https://www.stage32.com/webinars/Netflix-%20-Stage-32-Present-Genre-Come...

Once you get some good ideas about where you'd like to focus, then hop in on one of our current labs to dig deep!

Karen, thank you so much for sharing that. I'll definitely look into those webinars as well, seeing as they are free. :)
