Hello from Texas! My name is Jim, and I've been on Stage 32 about 6 weeks now. Primarily, I'm an entertainment journalist, but have published a book of poems ("To Scratch the Surface of Beauty"). My current projects include writing for an animated science fiction web series based on the life of the Apostle Paul and an unnamed screenplay. I'm an aspiring actor as well, looking for work in North Texas(Dallas/Fort Worth) and the Austin area. Anyone new to Stage 32? You're gonna love it! It's full of great people ready to help out. If there's anything I can do myself, let me know. Either way, let's connect here.
Kind words about our community, James. Thank you. So many of our members try to wear different hats, and it certainly helps to understand the filmmaking as a whole. I say, get connected with other creatives in Austin: https://www.stage32.com/people?coordinates=&name=&location=Austin%2C+Tex... collaborate on projects and never stop writing and creating your own vision.
You should consider joining http://txmpa.org/
Thanks for the share Brad. Have you been a part of TXMPA prior to moving to Pasadena? If so, what was your experience with that. I love to learn about these things from a third parties rather than from the source.
I don't remember. I don' t think TXMPA existed when I moved to Los Angeles in 1990. I could be wrong. I was only working in the business for three years prior to moving to L.A. But I still work occasionally in Texas and I maintain a lot of my relationships with filmmaker and the community there.
Great to hear from you, Brad.
Thanks Brad. Really good to know. I try to keep these things handy whenever someone asks about it. Much appreciated.
Hi James, thanks for sharing! Your book of poems sounds rather profound - would you have any advice for self-publishing?
Self publishing is a double edged sword. It's really easy to publish a book, but you have to do all the marketing yourself. If you already have strong name recognition, that's okay, but established publishers will likely pay you big $ in that case anyway. It really depends on how many resources you start with and how much time you have to market your book. Also, what is your sales goal? Do you want to sell 1000 or 100,000 copies? Either way, I'd do the research and see if self-publishing or traditional publishing works best toward accomplishing your goals.
Thanks for the thoughtful advice James! You make a really good point about having the time and ability to market your own book as well as determining a sales goal. I'd never thought about self publishing my work, but I'm giving it some serious consideration. Thanks again!
You're welcome! Whatever you decide, I hope it's successful.
Hello James
Hello Dorothy! I hope you're having a wonderful week.
Do you have a profile on the Texas Production Directory? http://www.governor.state.tx.us/film/directory
Not yet. I'm still digging out from under my backlog. I'm working on a short piece right now, but I'll fill out a profile as soon as I submit it tonight.
