How does your environment influence your writing?

Does where you live affect the way you write? In other words, does what you see every day influence what you put into your scripts? And if so, how? When I used to live by the beach, nearly every day, I would take an hour or more to ride my bike. I found that would generally have a positive effect on the way I viewed the rest of my day; and therefore, often be inspiring. Now, that I live near the country, I more often find ways to incorporate what I see into my writing. The setting for my new sci-fi work is going to be in Central Texas. What about you people living in super urbanized locations like London, New York, LA or Paris, what influence (if any) does this have on your writing?

Phillip E. Hardy, Prolifique

@Jim: Yes, but sick in a good way.

Leo Sopicki

I think exercise in the morning helps, no matter where you live.

Cherie Grant

Nothing about suburban Melbourne influences my writing in any way. At least not in any way I can fathom.

Clockwork and 2001were my favorite films in college. I don't know how many times I've seen them. The local writers group I'm in suggested I watch both Red Dawn movies to help with a script I'm working on. Watching a film is like being in a different environment,, right?

Tom Stohlgren

Having traveled helps a little; having an active imagination helps a lot!

Emi Sano

I agree with Tom. I've ventured around to different states a bit and just listening to how people interact with each other and visiting new places just helps the creative flow.

Jody Ellis

Well two of my screenplays take place in Alaska, where I live, so I think it's fair to say I'm influenced by my environment. I've also traveled extensively, which gives me a different perspective from my own backyard. I like to see how people live, how they interact. Total people watcher. But really, my own sick and twisted mind with its rampant imaginings and weird ideas has probably influenced me more than anything else, lol.

Place has a profound effect on my writing. Not only do I need to have a strong sense of place for my characters, but I need to be in a powerful location.

Brad Christensen

It definitely does for me. Not just the place though but the mood. I try and take advantage of those inspirations and let them add more to what I happen to be writing. Also I love writing science fiction. :)

Dan Guardino

It doesn't me.

Phil Parker

My writing environment influences my state of mind, but that's about it. I live near the beach now but the script I just finished is set in the Australian desert. Fortunately I could draw from some memories of time spent there. :-)

Laronda Charese

my environment directly effects my writing desire and my blogging habits, things I hear from others (their opinions ) causes me to argue with myself (through my characters) it also causes me to blog more often. by this I express myself in ways that I haven't before. I heard a rapper say," if people just leave me alone I would have nothing to write about". for me its not just if people mess with me it's any injustice or act of love or funny situation that causes me to take action in my mind not to mention my very vivid imagination so... Short answer is Yes.... (forgive my conversational writing) :)
