I'm writing a scene with an old man and little girl playing together making horse sounds(neighing, snorting, whinying).Any suggestions on how to write those sounds in dialogue lines?

Erik Föge

It might sound crazy maybe ask an old man and a young girl what they would say in that situation. I believe you will get good results.

Jerry Robbins

WHICKER, NEIGHS are easy for actors to replicate. I agree with Dan, if you just put "makes horse sounds" any actor will know what you mean.

You have to decide the authenticity of the sounds and age group. Sound effect machines can produce the sound as well as humans.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. The reason I was requesting how to spell those sounds was I was going to use the dialogue to express the growing connection between the characters basically by just having the old man start by doing a half arsed job of making the sounds and in the end dropping his guard and doing it properly as the scene continues.Show don't tell as they say. Thanks again to everyone for their ideas.

Nick Assunto

Unfortunately, neigh.
