Film Proposal

Greetings, my name is Nokuthula Gumede and I'm 27 years. I stay in Alberton Gauteng. I am an Accounting Graduate who is interested in the film industry. I love acting and Directing, I studied dramatic art in high school.

I have a great concept for a movie, but don't know how to go about proposing it. Since my film knowledge is very limited. I would love to get a mentor and somewhere who can assist me.

Your responses will be highly appreciated.

Thank You

Hello Nokuthula Leya Gumede - very nice to meet you! Welcome to Stage 32. Here's a blog post that will help you best navigate S32: www.stage32.com/blog/navigating-stage-32-for-your-best-experience-3095 It would also be best if you added an image to your profile so that you'll show up in searches and be able to connect better with others and learn from them. All the best to you!

Hey there!

Some great resources on here / in forums if you search. But, like anything else, you learn from doing your due diligence and putting in hard work. Start out by reading books or watching YouTube Videos. Establish what your goal is, yet be realistic. IS it to create a TV Show that will be picked up. Probably unlikely. IS it to create film, and build pedigree while leveling up your skill tree, that's more likely. Either way, don't get discouraged. Best wishes to you!

Hi Nokuthula Leya Gumede! So glad that you're here! There are some great education offerings here on the site that can help you learn, and if you look at the LABS specifically, they often include one-on-one time and/or direct feedback on your projects. If you email edu@stage32.com they can recommend some great options depending on what your focus is :)

Welcome to the community, Nokuthula Leya Gumede. What are you having trouble with? Figuring out how to write the idea into a script?

Yes

Have you outlined your idea, Nokuthula Leya Gumede?

Richard Morell

Hi, Nokuthula--Welcome! With this idea you have, have you written what inside you makes you want to create this story, preferably in film form? I ask because sometimes when I really go into an idea or if a character grabs my attention, then I want to know what it is inside me that is driving me to explore this. I know as a writer I can get obsessed with my stories, so I want to find what it is in me that is pushing to get this story told. What is your PUSH to make this real? And if it takes a whole notebook of insights or three notebooks to get this idea together, it can be worth it.

There are all sorts of stories as to how ideas get created. The playwright John Patrick Shanley was once asked "what are you working on" and he said he only had the title: "Doubt." And when he sat with the title, he realized it was about the nuns in a prep school in the 1960s. And he went exploring from there. Many ways in. Start with what fascinates you.

After you know the why behind what it is you're writing, you can identify your genre, your main character, their goal, obstacle, and need/want. As you get acquainted with these essential elements, you will also see what kind of project it is--whether it truly is a film, a series, a play, or even a narrative piece. If your obstacle involves an antagonist who stands in the way of the goal, or if it's a romance, is both the goal AND the obstacle, then looking into the main character and antagonist's relationship will be important too. I also find it helps to discern what the character's wound is. These are the things a screenwriter considers at the beginning when it comes to the structure.
