Pat's Tips of the Week

Hey Writers!

Hope you're doing well! I'm Pat A., the Writer Liaison here at Stage 32. I communicate with all the writers in our community daily about opportunities available throughout the site and I am here to be a resource whenever you need tips, suggestions, and tailored recommendations to move your career forward. As some of you know, I send out a weekly email blast with my "Tips of the Week" about all the cool things going on in our community and the industry at large that I see/learn about/discover/stumble upon week to week. And we've recently decided to skip the mailing list and deliver those tips to everyone here directly in the Screenwriting Lounge! So hold onto your hats, we've got a fun one this week!

1. In the Screenwriting Lounge this week, writer Chase Cysco hosted a spirited discussion gauging whether members of the community like to write in the morning or the evening. The consensus seemed to lean towards more night owls than early birds. A lot of 12am-5am, 3am, and 4-6am in the mix. What about you? Are you sharper at sunrise or midnight? Jump in and join the conversation here:

2. As writers, we're always looking for places to submit our scripts and get our material out in front of decision makers, which is why Stage 32 is what it is! We're a platform for getting in front of executives so you can make connections that lead to projects getting made. This week, I sort of errantly stumbled upon the fact that writers can submit concepts directly to Angel Studios, the independent studio behind films like Sound of Freedom and series like The Chosen. While Angel Studios seems to lean towards faith or message based projects, on their website they allow writers and creatives to submit concepts to their team for review. The submission process is fairly thorough and involves conceptual materials and a video it seems. But if you write the kinds of projects Angel Studios may like, well you can go direct to the source. *To note, Stage 32 is not affiliated with Angel Studios in any way. It's just something I saw!

3. For those who don't check the trades, Deadline reported this week that David Ellison of Paramount pretty much confirmed that a 3rd TOP GUN movie is in the works! That sound you hear is the glorious roar of F-16s flying overhead once again. The newly minted CEO Ellison and his top flight team talked up the new sequel as "top priority" for the company.

Although a sequel may be getting ready for take-off, the studio is the midst of the legal dogfight with self-declared co-screenwriter Shaun Gray over the Oscar-nominated script for the 2022 blockbuster which grossed $1.5 billion and counting. So here's to hoping they can settle their present legal dispute (and pay the writer!) soon so we can get hyped for the next airshow!

4. Lastly, wanted to put you on to a FREE webinar we have available right now, in collaboration with NETFLIX itself - How To Write a TV Series To Budget. The 3-hour webinar is taught by Jeanette B. Milio, a veteran producer and entertainment finance expert with over 25 years of experience in film and television, who breaks down everything about how to scale your pilot to various budget levels for a big streamer. So check it out if you're a TV writer and enjoy!

As always, I'm around as resource for you to answer any questions you have and hopefully demystify as much of this industry as I can. Just drop me a dime at success@stage32.com anytime!

I get my best work done at night. There’s something about the quiet hours that just lets everything flow. Excited to check out the Angel Studios submission link too!

Göran Johansson

Do I misunderstand angel.com or do they ask for a 250 dollar application fee?

Laurie Ashbourne

I didn't know you're doing these tips - very nice!

If anyone wants the deets on Angel Studios feel free to reach out to me; I know their business model very well and it's not so great for filmmakers.

Göran Johansson

Dear Laurie, please explain what business model Angel Studios have. As I wrote, I have the impression that one is asked to pay to submit. Which I find odd. Better spend 250 dollars on filmmaking, to learn what works in practice.

Pat Alexander

Laurie Ashbourne that's good to know! i just stumbled upon it and fiddled with the submission process for a minute to see what it takes. Seems slightly arbitrary and not really my type of content but hey to each their own. cheers!

Pat Alexander

And yes Göran Johansson , upon further investigation, it does seem there's a 250 fee to submit. That's just what they do I guess. I have no idea why because we have no professional affiliation with them. Just something I saw. Would always say invest in yourself over anything else!

Love this week’s resources Pat Alexander !

Sebastian Tudores

thx for sharing these here in the lounge Pat Alexander - cheers
