Hi, I’m Kat—a songwriter, author, and mentor who helps creatives move through the messy start, middle, and sometimes end of their projects.
I’ve worn a lot of hats over the years, but everything I do comes down to this: I turn emotion into art—whether through words, music, or helping others find their voice.
I’d love to connect with others who use creativity to heal, express, or make sense of life. How about you—what drives your creative work?

Hi, Kat Spencer. I hope you're having a great week! I use creativity to entertain, shine a light on things that are going on, and make sense of things.

Hi Kat! Do you have a preferred instrument to use when writing a song? I prefer a guitar since it's easy to find chord progressions and experiment with solos/melodies.

The question "what drives your creative work?" is one that I can best answer with: when I get a story idea, usually when a few scenes -- "trailer moments" -- splurge out from my brain, I get an adrenaline rush if it's a story I like. Eventually, sooner rather than later, it goes into my idea pool, and outlines, and beats, and script and finally finshed draft.
If the energy fizzles, if the frustration of putting it together overtakes the joy of the idea, then I put it aside.

Kat Spencer I too use my emotions to drive me creatively. Lately, those emotions have been in a dark place because of life and circumstance. Poor choices winding me on a path I can't seem to correct. But, somehow, a hope that it might get better still radiates from deep under it all. Maybe, I'm lying to myself. But, I feel my art of writing is better than ever though the wounds of my exterior more fragile and exposed. I've believed healing for me is breaking through and turning my scripts into reality. Really, healing would be just NOT to feel like a failure.

Hi Patrick Koepke! My go-to instrument is the piano :). I've tried guitar, but my sensitive fingers just can't do it haha

Daniel Silvas Everything I've created came from my emotions and dark times, so I get that! The creations also helped me heal. I would say by taking actions and creating with those emotions you are already a success. Hang in there!! Keep going, even if the tunnel is long, there is light coming!

Kat Spencer thanks for re-introducing yourself. We have a lot in common as I also work with creatives to help unblock their processes. I see creativity as a means to heal and also what we get to do after we have healed. We should chat some time.

Hey Kat - that is a great question and I am interested to hear the various responses. For some reason I cannot actually articulate what the ultimate motivation is but I want to leave a legacy that people in the future can look at and know Darrell A Pennington had a hand in creating this. Sounds weird probably but I have had that need since I was a young kid dreaming about a life that had to get better.

I don't think that's weird at all, Darrell Pennington - I think leaving a legacy and continuing past our earthly stay is something we all desire.

Thanks Ashley Renée Smith!! I think that's what most of us are doing when we create. It's how we learn, process, heal, and grow.
