Really pleased that my thriller MORGAN’S WAKE has been named a quarterfinalist, among so many other great pieces of work (some of which I recognise from my own work as a script consultant, which is really great to see). Congratulations to everybody who is progressing &, indeed, everyone who entered.

Congratulations to all quarterfinalists! Honored to make the list with my script SHAOLIN DEMON, my love letter to the martial arts and action films that shaped my upbringing and inspired me to become a practitioner. The flick asks, how do you take an honorable working class husband and turn him into a ruthless and revered underworld killer? It answers: You break him. A brief synopsis:

Tony Woo is abandoned by his desperate mother as a baby, almost eaten alive by wolves, then rescued and raised by Shaolin warrior monks. Decades later, he is now an immigrant in LA looking to start the family he never had with his wife, police officer Lian. When Lian is murdered for getting too close to busting a human trafficking operation, Tony loses a huge piece of himself. A violent confrontation with Triads ends with Tony receiving an offer: Fight on their behalf in a brutal underground combat tournament with ancient roots. The reigning champion is Brock Volkov, a powerful Russian gangster who made enemies of the Triads. He also murdered Lian. Consumed with grief and rage, Tony embraces his dark side (abandonment issues put a chip on his shoulder) in order to survive the unforgiving tournament which features team matches, weapons battles, and free-for-all rumbles packaged in a world of rules and tradition. But as more truth about Lian's death is revealed, Tony's bloody quest for justice extends beyond the tournament and into the highest layers of LA's power structure. The film is a fun yet raw study on how a humble, compassionate man is broken by a cold world and, in trying to right its wrongs, transforms into a hardened gangster in constant life or death conflict.
