Anything Goes : Desperately Seeking a Title by Ilanna Mandel

Desperately Seeking a Title

First, happy new year to everyone - may all my fellow scribes, producers, directors and creative colleagues have a year filled with good health, much joy and great success.

Now to the issue - I've completed two of the first six episodes for my sci fi anthology. I just can't think of a title for it. Here's a logline for the series: “Across worlds and timelines, strangers encounter phenomena that expose the hidden architecture of existence—and force them to choose who they become when the universe pays attention.”

Maurice Vaughan

Happy New Year, Ilanna Mandel! Hope you have a year filled with good health, much joy and great success too! What about Phenomena?

Elle Bolan

Happy New Year! Now, this title... These timelines. How big a space of time?

Could "Eon Reach" work?

Paul Pastore's "The Architects of Forever" is brilliant

You need a Killer title to go along with a logline you can pitch, and yours lacks a defined hero. Try this pair on for size; Killer Title: "WHEN THE UNIVERSE NOTICES" and your logline: "When ordinary people across multiple timelines discover fractures in reality that reveal the universe is watching them, they must decide whether to follow its design—or defy it and risk collapsing existence itself.”

J. Austin Gentry

Hi Ilanna, the log line... Who they become when the universe pays attention - what does this mean?

Kevin Hager

Well maybe the title should match the synopsis like Across the Stars or Across Time.

James E Ward

I like the title " When the Universe Looks Back" In my opinion sounds premium. I also like Hugh's suggestion "When The Universe Notices". Good luck!

"The Noticing"

Nancy Wilkinson

Maybe, “Hidden Existence.” Or “Exposed.”

Ilanna Mandel

The Architects of Forever is brilliant and fits the mythology - I was also thinking of The Shimmering - as a shimmering barrier billions of years old is activated by a mythical deer.

Paul Pastore

Thank you Fran and Ilanna. I'm usually pretty good with titles. It's the stuff after "FADE IN:" that I have trouble with... :)

David Alan Kleve

I'm pleased to hear that. How about, Woven Threads.

Hi Illanna Mandel, it seems that something brings these strangers together in discovery for a reason unbeknownst to the universal consciousness So "The Gathering". Though it is weak comparing it to your logline. "The Force of Reckoning"

Simin Zare

Based on the themes of choice and observation, these came to mind:

When the Universe Pays Attention

Across Worlds, Across Choices

Hope this helps spark something.

Hi Ilana. An interesting conundrum. Since this takes place in space, I thought the word Celestial would be appropriate. The phenomenon forces the strangers to choose who they become thus releasing them from bondage, I thought of a genie. So, try "The Celestial Genie". Alternatively "Celestial Impetus", impetus describing the moving force phenomenon. Good luck and Happy New Year

Here's a much more refined logline - A sci‑fi anthology where a surreal deer and a mysterious barrier tear people out of their lives where they can save a life, right a wrong, or change the course of history. THIS is why the Architects of Forever is a good match. Ideas? Thoughts?

Maurice Vaughan

I think your logline is better, @Ilanna. I understand the story better from it. Architects of Forever is a cool title, but I don't see how "of Forever" ties into the story. What about Architects for the title? Or Architects of _________ (something about the story).

Destiny Deer

Ilanna Mandel

It could be Architects of Time because the barrier is sending people through to "load bearing points in history". These points solidify the time line. I'm also thinking THE PASSAGE might work because it's how people pass through the barrier into another time line - their identity changes but they're there to protect the timeline and ensure events unfold.

Ilanna Mandel

here is episode 3: Episode 3 – Last Chance – Dr. Mara Li is on the verge of a breakthrough in warp field theory — a propulsion model that could enable an intergenerational ship to escape Earth’s ecological collapse. Her lab is isolated, her funding precarious, and her conscience heavy: the technology works, but the energy source is unstable and potentially catastrophic.

As Mara runs a high-energy simulation, the deer pairs with a snowy owl to manifest the barrier. A sudden pulse of light and sound pulls her consciousness into the body of a NASA engineer in Cape Canaveral on January 28, 1986 — the day of the Challenger explosion. Mara discovers the engineering flaw that will cause Challenger to explode. In doing so, she must allow events to unfold as is so she can return to her own time and fix the flaws in her own work.

I also like Across Worlds

Rose Dupuis

This sounds so fascinating I want to read it to know what happens and how it all takes place. I see your dilemma with constraining this story with a title

Maurice Vaughan

I like Architects of Time, THE PASSAGE, and Across Worlds, Ilanna Mandel. I vote for Architects of Time.

Jovana T Rizzo

Please don't push too hard on yourself, looking for the perfect title, because production studios LOVE changing it anyway. Well, they figure that when they buy your work, they can do whatever they want with it.

Fares Moha

hello, Maurice, Architect of Time really works — very high-concept. Ilanna Mandel If you want something shorter, I’d suggest INDEX (a nod to the hidden architecture / underlying system). And I took the liberty of adding this in case it helps: sometimes the title is already hiding in your logline without you even realizing it… or possibly "Universeen". Happy New Year to everyone!”

Maurice Vaughan

Happy New Year, Fares Moha!
