Introduce Yourself : Grabbing the ropes? by Michaela Dunn

Grabbing the ropes?

Good morning! Or evening, afternoon, what time it may be for you.

I only joined stage32 this morning! I’m pretty young (~20s) and I’m not in school for screenwriting or anything, however I am getting my BA in English! I’ve been curious about dipping my toes into writing scripts for… lack of a better term, “real”? I’m not sure.

I was wondering if I could talk to any of you about what you do, how you got into scripting, etc! For specifics sake, I would love to write for children’s animation! :DD I have my own pilot and spec scripts that I’ve written to practice. I just… can’t figure out what to do after that?

Richard "RB" Botto

Hi Michaela Dunn! Welcome to the community! I've moved this post to the Introduce Yourself Lounge to get more eyes on it.

As for what I do, I'm the CEO of Stage 32 and also a screenwriter, producer and actor.

As for your scripts, connect with Geoff and the Development Team at success@stage32.com - This is what they do day in and day out! Great to have you here!

Geoff Hall

Michaela Dunn hi Michaela, it’s great to meet you here on Stage 32. Welcome!

And don’t believe a word of what RB says, he’s not just the CEO, he’s like freakin’ Gandalf, fighter of Orks and The Balrogs of the industry.

Anyway, myths aside, is there anything I can help you with?

Pat Savage

You've come to the right place!

Sam Rivera

Hey Michaela Dunn . Love that you're jumping in without a formal background. An English degree is great training for this. And writing for children's animation is a real and wonderful goal. Since you're new, check out the platform walkthrough video to help you get around: https://www.stage32.com/help?category=how-to-navigate-stage&parent=341676 What's your pilot about?

Michaela Dunn

Pat Savage Haha, thank you!! It’s nice to meet you ☺️

Michaela Dunn

Sam Rivera Hi Sam!! Thank you!! I’ve enjoyed writing for years now, and I’m looking forward to at least checking it out and giving it a shot!! I’ll watch the video once I’m out of work, I just wanted to get something out there beforehand!

See, I have two different ones, as I can’t really tell which one I want to focus on yet! Sorry I don’t bore you and drag on and on, I’ll shorthand the concepts!!

The first one has a working title that I’ll probably have to change called “Charmbreakers”! Middle school girls Cardinal, Eva, and Pelia, learn that the magic they have is considered “defective” - something no one in the general public knows can happen. The girls end up being tracked down by leaders within their world’s monarchy, where they are about to take their magic away from them. Just in the nick of time, they end up being rescued by members of an underground organization that calls themselves The Charmbreakers, and the three girls end up joining their group to protect other ‘defective’ magic users like themselves from them.

The second one follows the children of your classic fairytale stories and myths! I have it under “To Tell A Tale” right now! Ianna, daughter of The Selkie King, and Caelum, son of Robin Hood, end up begrudgingly working with one another, after finding out world leaders (Snow White, Cinderella, King Midas, these types of characters) created physical storybooks that bind and trap people to predetermined paths in their lives. The two of them way to escape the lives they are in, but have vastly different approaches to doing so. I really want this series to focus on relationships and growth and connection, while also exploring what DOES anyone want to do with their lives, and for some side characters, how does the PERCEPTION of you from other people impact your story? Things like that!!

Sorry for the long reply to you, I haven’t gotten the hang of summarizing and loving yet!!! — but it meant a lot you posted. Thank you!! What do you do and how have you enjoyed Stage32??

Michaela Dunn

Geoff Hall Richard "RB" Botto Thank you two so much, I’ll have to check back in after work for these!! ☺️

Michael David

Sure! I'm game! Just added you to my network. I'm also working on a kids' animation feature right now.

Ashley Renée Smith

Hi Michaela Dunn, welcome to Stage 32! I’m Ashley, Head of Community here on the platform. It’s so great to meet you, and I love that you’re already diving in and asking questions. That curiosity is exactly what will help you grow.

One of the most important things you can do here is stay active and visible in the Lounges. I’d especially recommend spending time in the Screenwriting Lounge (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/screenwriting), the Animation Lounge (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/animation), and the Acting Lounge (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/acting). Those are great spaces to ask questions like this, share what you’re working on, learn from others, and start building real connections over time.

I also took a quick look at your profile, and I’d encourage you to spend a little more time filling out your bio. You don’t need a long list of credits to have a great profile. You can share your creative interests, your passion for children’s animation, your favorite shows or writers, and your goals. That helps people understand who you are and makes it much easier to connect with you.

Since you’re figuring out your next steps in screenwriting, I’d also recommend reaching out to our Education Team at Edu@Stage32.com. Let them know you’re interested in writing for children’s animation and building your skills, and they can point you toward the classes, labs, and resources that will help you most.

And if you want a great overview of how to use Stage 32 and what steps to take next, I’d love for you to join my next Community Open House:

You’re already off to a strong start by writing pilots and specs. What kind of children’s animation shows inspire you the most right now?

Martina Aoumad

Hello everyone, I’m a new writer. Only a few days ago I finally gathered the courage to put on paper what has been in my head for a long time. I have absolutely no experience with this, so if any of you have read my ideas, I’d really appreciate any advice on how to improve them."
