Hi Mike! Welcome to the wonderful world of screenwriting! Have you read Save the Cat by Blake Snyder? Check it out as well as IMSDB. Lots of screenplays to learn from there! http://www.imsdb.com
Nice to read your humble & honest self assessment! Write, keep writing, get feed back, read more books, not just "how to" books, but those in teh style you are looking to create.....& write!

The only instruction I have had so far is Story by Bob McKee, a book by Syd Field and countless contradictory YouTube videos who all claim to have found the perfect structure paradigm. I want to learn enough to transcend a set parameter like Tarantino, Nolan, etc. Willing to pay.
I can mentor you on editing im not a screenwriter

Expand commentMike, I think that there are many "right" ways to approach writing. My style of writing breaks many traditional "rules", but it works for me. Your task is to discover the method that works best for you. When you do, the ideas that are swimming in your head will find an exit. I think you're off to a great start with Robert McKee's book, and I suggest that you study the elements of stories before focusing on screenwriting structure. Structure is important, but unless you first understand how to convey your thoughts, structure can become an obstacle instead of a tool. I hope that helps a bit.

Expand commentWriting is part of the journey, having things to draw from from your life and those around you is another. People tend to need deep wells to draw from and notice also you are looking at Directors not just writers there. They are writer/directors. I don't know enough about the ins and outs of Hollywood at that level, but I think it is significant because they have more control than any one writer or director tends to have individually. James Cameron is another guy like that. Spielberg and Lucas as well.
Thanks for the networking request. Good to know that there are some budding writers in my area : ) Best wishes for success!
I know right? Stage 32 has been a GOD send for me. It's hard to network outside of a film school or local program, both of which are not around here. I'm looking for a screenwriting mentor. Any suggestions?
