Truer words ne'er spoke. Okay, typed. I was enormously amused when Destry Spielberg - who recently made a movie with Hopper Penn written by Owen King (all the children of who you think they might be) - claimed that she got no special consideration because of her heritage and had to work just as hard...

Hey thanks, Michael. I share the pain of not being the son of Spielberg or Penn. But we persist.

Solange Plaza

Omg! This blog had all the feels... had me laughing out loud so many times :) This was really relatable. Thank you for sharing!

Dave Ash

Hey that was very nice, Solange. Many thanks!!

Angelo Raza

Thank you David

Leotien Parlevliet

Thank you for this blog, David. I take especially lesson 2 to heart.

There's something so great about the ethos of saying screw you to Hollywood and doing it yourself. Thanks for sharing your story.

Dave Ash

Hey thanks, Joanna. Very much appreciated!

Karen "Kay" Ross

It's true, Dave Ash, there is no easy way. Great blog, btw, thanks for sharing!

Very enjoyable read. No surprise that you did well in screenplay contests -- your writing is entertaining and enlightening. Though I wonder if some screenplay contests, when they are linked to other revenue-generating activities like pitch sessions, may sometimes be marketing strategies in disguise....

Thanks, Ken. I agree that paying people to read your scripts is a mixed bag, at best. If you can find other screenwriters you respect that are also looking for readers that can be the better route --...

This was a fantastic read David. I love how it was written; Informative and inspiring. Thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom.

Dave Ash

Hey thanks, Daniel! Very much appreciated.

Thank you Dave for this article...it is very inspiring. You hit the proverbial nail on the head on everything I've been feeling...although I'm yet to make it to one of those $100.00 events. I am a nobody who spent his life in the Navy, and now have ambitions of seeing a series that's haunted me sinc...

The odds are better that you will be struck by lightning while driving to pick up a check for winning the Powerball made out to you and your new wife, Miss Universe......"

Thanks very much, David. The whole lesson: Do it yourself, the best that you can, whit heart and soul, and, the most important: don´t be afraid.

Dave Ash

Thanks for checking it out, Johan. And good deconstruction of the whole lesson.

Deborah F. Blum

I just watched the trailer for Incompleteness and it is fantastic.

Dave Ash

Thanks, Deborah! Very nice of you.

A very inspiring read filled with honest truths that are sometimes hard to accept, but David dug deep, saw the humor and found a way to be true to his passion. I admire that in a person. Good luck, David! (And from a fellow Midwesterner who frequently visits Minneapolis, I think Minnesota is pretty great!)

Dave Ash

Hey thanks, Andrea! Glad enjoyed the piece. And Minneapolis is pretty great if you're here for either of our months of summer.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and humor. (My favorite part: "Or you could hire a hooker.") You're right about being pulled out of a story when you recognize big name talent. I create diverse roles in my screenplays. At this point I'm not expecting big name talent and who knows--maybe someone will be 'discovered' along the way.

Michelle Toale-Burke

Reading this on my lunch break. I've been laughing out loud the entire time. Thanks for sharing this David, and for the laughs too!

Also, I'm in St. Paul quite frequently. Would love to connect sometime:)

Michelle

Thanks for the hard earned lessons! Enjoyed reading the post. There is something similar in "cold and depressing Minnesota" to Helsinki in winter just add the darkness. "INCOMPLETENESS" is on my watch list when it is available near me! Loved the trailer. Thanks for sharing this Tuesday motivation post.

Dave Ash

Hey thanks for the kind words, Harri-Pekka. Hang in there in Helsinki!
