YOUNG GOODMAN BROWN

YOUNG GOODMAN BROWN
By Matthew Parvin

GENRE: Thriller, Historical
LOGLINE:

Salem Village, 1725. A journey home for a young Boston magistrate becomes a nightmare as he is confronted by the unbelievable past of his dying father, his about-to-be widowed mother and a community where nothing is as it seems. Based on the short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

SYNOPSIS:

Haven Brown has come. His father, Goodman, is dying of consumption. His mother, Faith, holds vigil over her husband. The village of Salem sleeps uneasy as night falls, waiting for death.

In the shadows of their family hovel, Haven sits with his father, an man he has not seen in seven years. But tonight is too late for regrets, Goodman Brown must make his confession to his estranged son. A tale of woe, of corruption and of a loss of hope that has clung to him ever since.

Twenty-five years ago, a newly-married Goodman Brown left his home at dusk. He journeyed into the woods surrounding Salem village. His search was for the secret of the world, the power to see and control everything. No matter the cost, no matter the truths revealed, no matter the consequences.

Goodman Brown found exactly what he wanted. He's been paying for it ever since.

Prescient and relevant. I read this story in 2004 in a Short Story lit class in college. It has the ending we all fear. .
