Pitching

What are your key script pitching tips?

James Drago

Know your story. Be yourself. Leave time for questions.

Regina Lee

Have tonal comps in mind.

Debbie Croysdale

Go to screenwriting festivals and STUDY the people available to pitch to. Getting in front of the RIGHT person is hurdle No One. Know what type of work they have assigned in the past, there are many different ways for a writer to execute each genre, and simply being "Horror" or "Comedy" etc is not enough to secure their interest. Dress smart, and leave a card. Know the characters and the story until its almost part of your own genetic makeup, and the characters themselves will always answer any question. Go armed with two project ideas so if first idea has obviously fallen on stony ground , jump onto the next one. Always listen with keen interest to what they say, even if thinking otherwise.

The goal of the pitch is to make us want to read the script, so you have to ride the line between giving us enough information and giving us too much. You want us to have questions. You want us to want to know more... but don't leave us with logic questions (that can be a turnoff).
